This guy just sounds pretentious, and maybe kinda retarded.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you are what you call others. But in that case, don't talk about yourself that way.

Also, OP, it just sounds like a Boston accent. You and anon need to chill.

OP

I wasn't aware it exhibited lack of chill to say that my mental "voice" of him is Donald Duck? :P

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
He *is* very pretentious indeed. :P

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I read that in Foghorn Leghorn's voice.

"I say, I say, I say son... are you lookin' foah us?"

The Foundation series was not my favorite of Asimov's works, honestly, and the writing the accents was a small part of that.

OP

He rarely does, though. Like, as far as I know only Lord Dorwin was ever written funetikally like that at least in the first three novels. Now, granted, in Foundation's Edge, the Hamish dialect is explicitly spelled out, but there's a reason for that.

I hate it when people write out accents. It usually ends up looking messy and takes longer to figure out what the character is trying to say than it takes to read the entire story.

I don't mind a dropped "G" (like tryin' or workin'), an "Ah" instead of "I", or even a "Z" or "D" instead of a "Th" but anything past that gives me a headache.

Oh man, as someone from the South, the 'ah' instead of 'I' drives me CRAZY.

I can handle phonetically transcribed accents better in comics than prose, for some reason. Some writers can pull it off... but it's HARD.

Da Great Gatsby

If that makes you mad then please, don't ever read the AAVE version of The Great Gatsby (yes, it's a real publication http://www.thebookpatch.com/BookStore/da-great-gatsby/a68639e1-824e-4d49-9257-f1de61cca5f6). It'll make someone like you tear your eyes out.

That book doesn't bother me as much as you thought it would.

Try harder, Troll-berone.

I read that in a Boston accent.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Kennedy Boston. Yeah, there can be such issues writing out accents.

Re: I read that in a Boston accent.

Yeah exactly. Fo-ah Suppah oi want a pahdy PLATAH (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQU4bbPbr7w)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! That's why it's a good rule of thumb to limit or avoid writing in dialect altogether.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
It has its uses, mind. You can't not think of Hagrid without his well-associated speech in Harry Potter.

That's why I said "limit", rather than suggesting people omit it completely. ;)
