Re: controversial opinions thread

While I'd certainly like to see more people who "look like me" in film and television, I also think it's really important to be able to find inspiration from and relate to people who don't, so much so that I think it mostly all evens out in the wash, you know? I'm not going to angry and butthurt about not being perfectly represented.

As a fat, middle-aged woman, I agree with this. Like who the hell cares.

I agree

which is why more movies should be diverse and movie companies and audiences should stop saying they aren't interested in movies because they star female/non-white characters

I'll hand you that one. "Not relatable" is such a popular code phrase for "not white enough."

Yep. POCs have had quite a few years to learn how to relate to white characters, sometimes in all-white casts. If the anon thinks that relating to people who aren't like you is so important, then diversity in media should be their priority instead of maintaining the (still mostly white) status quo. Funny that...

Same.

That's pretty much why I'm all for diversity, but I don't care about representation.

I want many varied character with many different traits and I think it's better seeing those characters not like me having some stuff in common with me instead of the "me me me" alternative of representation.

I'd agree if there were more situations where white people learned to find inspiration in and relate to people who weren't white. Right now, the traffic is mostly one way, and sorry, but as a POC I don't think that "learning to be inspired by white people when you're not" is a huge problem the world faces right now in the same way that getting wet when you're in the middle of the Pacific is a problem that needs addressing.

Everyone is correct here. I'm black so I do see myself in the media often. However, I rarely see black geeky people on TV. I'd like to see that without the character being another Urkel (ugh) or having to maintain some sort of "street cred" UGH.

I'm almost more focused on seeing other cultures and ethnicities represented. Why do you only see Native Americans in SF and westerns? I want to see an Indian character on a show that isn't set in Indian Country and doesn't rely on them being a spiritual whatever. And that character or characters can't be white people who are 1/16 some tribe no one's ever heard of. I'm want red actors.

This. I'm Asian, and there are some Asian roles I'd like to see, too:

* Chinese people who are "normal", i.e. not math geniuses or martial arts masters, they just want to go home, take off their pants and watch Netflix while eating mac and cheese
* confident Asian women who aren't sexualized Oriental Femme Fatales
* athletic bro Asians (they totally exist)
* Asian males who aren't portrayed as emasculated dudes who are never as manly or popular with women as white guys are
* More acknowledgement that there are Indians, Pakistanis, Vietnamese, Laotian, Thai, Cambodian, Indonesian, Malaysian, etc. flavors of Asian as well, not just Japanese, Chinese and Korean.
* let us play the cool friend once in a while, you guys! Not just the bespectacled dorky sidekick.

wasn't Harold from Harold and Kumar the cool friend?
