Re: controversial opinions thread

I don't think asexuals who are exclusively attracted to the opposite gender should be included in the LGBT community. You're a straight person who doesn't have sex, get over yourself (and even then, a lot of heteroromantic or whatever asexuals still have sex anyway!). I used to not think this was a controversial opinion, but apparently a lot of people get super bent out of shape about it

Absolutely agree.

I don't really think asexuals in general are part of the LGBT community though. Having sex with the same gender is kind of that thing that people have had against us for a thousand plus years, and "romantic", non-sexual relationships with same-gendered people have pretty much been wildly accepted until maybe relatively recently with the modern homophobic Western backlash.

da

If you're an asexual in a same gender relationship, you're probably going to get as much flack as a non-asexual in a same gender relationship though. It's not like most gay/bisexual/whatever people have sex with their partners in public and that's the reason why they're discriminated against. Bigots just don't like the idea of them being in a relationship.

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true, but I think some distinction is important. The act that was until relatively recently illegal in some states in the US, and in many countries around the world continues to be illegal and punishable by even execution, is gay sex. The distinction is important. An asexual person would probably get told off and harassed by a bigot with their same-sex partner, yes, but I guarantee if they told them they aren't actually having sex with this person and don't intend to, the bigot's rhetoric won't be as violent, since so much anti-LGBT rhetoric revolves around gay sex ("carpet muncher", "asses are for shitting not sex", etc)

At any rate, someone isn't an LGBT person for being asexual. They could be a "queer" person, if you will, despite being asexual.

DA

This assumes a bigot who calls people "carpet munchers" would be aware of asexuality and believe two guys who are married and in love go home and don't have sex and aren't just saying that. Chances are slim.

I think said bigots would assume they were having sex no matter what and wouldn't sit around listening to an explanation of asexuality.

this shouldn't be controversial, it's common sense

and the ridiculous tumblr asexy circular reasoning of "BUT THEN WHAT DOES THE 'A' STAND FOR" refusing to acknowledge the important history of the "A" as a stand-in for allies (aka closeted or questioning gay people) is insulting at best. they complain about being "left out" or feeling alienated in the LGBT community, I really don't get why they don't just stick to their own communities where they can discuss issues that are important to them.

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Many asexuals consider themselves part of the LGBT community (if an unwanted part), and they don't all deal with the same issues.

It's a lot easier to never come out as an asexual person, but there ARE issues w/ asexuality and invisibility, there have been forced rape, abuse, and a lot of people calling you mentally ill, etc.

It's not okay for you to act like it's just people wanting a special sanction card to feel good about themselves. Since when is being LGBT a great thing that people long for? All those people hoping they'll grow up Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, or Ace, right?

Yeah. It stands for Asexual. Fucking 'allies.'

God, this. Thank you. I mean it.

no, it's allies and always has been allies to allow closeted people to be a part of the community without risking their safety

revisionist history, just like the fucking asexies do with their spinster posts, isn't cute

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I fucking agree whole heartedly.

I honestly don't see the barbarians at the gate of cishet asexuals dying to deal with homophobia or biphobia, but whatever.

I don't like SGA because, 1. Mormon reparative therapy and 2. if it implies that I'm down with straight-identified bros who hit us up for blow jobs when drunk and bash us when sober, I want no part of it. Femmes, fats, and fairies preferred.

In what way is this controversial, it's the opinion of every second gatekeeping douche in the LGBT+ community I've run across.

yep

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
it's not being a "douche" not to want straight people in OUR community

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
Asexual people are not straight.

It literally stands for Asexual. Try google buddy.

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
this logic is as dumb as "the bible is true because the bible says it's true"

the people who added the A for asexual then point to the A and say "but the A's there!!" as if it always has been

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
However you want to define it, asexuality exists, it's part of the literal definition of LGBTQIA, and you could stop trying to take away the actual definition so you can feel good about you "ally" self while looking down on asexual people for not being "enough" of this or "enough" of that to count. :/

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not every asexual person calls themselves part of the LGBT community. But if someone wants to? Fuck you for telling them they can't. They are part of the LGBTQIA by definition until they change that to something new.

I'm sorry asexuals don't have enough merit for you.

Re: controversial opinions thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. If you're attracted to the opposite sex, you're straight. How much sex you do or don't have doesn't matter, you aren't going to face societal judgment or the risk of violence when you're out in public with your partner.

TIL, bisexuals are straight.

I used to not think this was a controversial opinion

Considering it's been a source of controversy and drama since at least 2010 (that's when I started noticing it anyway) I have to wonder how long you've held that opinion.
