Re: controversial opinions thread

I hate the way people my age talk, sometimes. Not even slang, though some of it gets on my nerves (but I'm not anti-slang in general, and I like some of it). It's more like:

- the way people in YouTube videos (especially people who review things) get super excited and talkreallyfast and sound like they're ranting about everything. I've tried to listen to some of those videos because I was interested in the content, but I couldn't get through the whole thing because the presenter's manner of speaking annoyed me so much. I don't want to feel like I'm being ranted at!

- making small things sound like A. HUGE. DEAL. by writing like they're yelling. Pretty much the written version of what I mentioned above.

- the way people on tumblr have to preface statements with "no, you don't understand" all the time. Annoying.

- turning nouns into verbs and descriptors into nouns. Some of it's funny. Some of it grates.

Oops I am guilty of all of those. I usually love them, but I can see how it could be frustrating for you if everyone around you uses the same mannerisms.

OP

I think part of my problem is that I really dislike feeling like I'm being yelled at or ranted at, and I hate talking to people who yell or get angry easily. Maybe it's partly because I'm not great at talking without stumbling over words and messing something up, so I do fine with patient people who let me finish what I'm saying, but not so well with people who get so emotional that they start interrupting, talking over me, and so on. I just avoid talking around them, because I know I have no chance - it's like me vs. a tank, and they're just going to run me over and smush me into the ground. Plus when people start yelling and getting really angry about something, I always feel like they're yelling AT me, even if they're just yelling about something.

Obviously, no one in a video or on Tumblr is yelling at me, but I guess I've just gotten used to being put off by that style of communication.

I have a tendency to yell or rant because I'm really, really bad at verbal communication. It's something I need to work on, so I'm sorry that people like me have made you uncomfortable.

It's okay, I'm bad at verbal communication too, but ended up with the opposite result (being too quiet and having to speak slowly to avoid everything I'm saying coming out all muddled).

Worse when it is a balding middle aged man doing it though, like Mark Oshira. Guy needs to tone it down and act his age.

na

I will always agree that Mark should tone it the fuck down, but the dude is 32 so I wouldn't quite call him middle aged yet. Slow down there

30s is middle aged, accept it.

So you expect to not get older than 60? That's sad.

Depending on race and where you live? You may be lucky to see 50.

Where the fuck do you live, Uganda? Most countries have life expectancies well above 60. Hell, in some countries 30 is a little over a third of what most people live to be

Depending on your race and where you live, even in the US average life expectancy is as low as 72 years.

Mark needs to chill for a variety of reasons, but none of them have to do with his age or relative lack of hair.

you really need to find a therapist to address your obsession

It's a real pain for me too. I'm fine if you're passionate about something, but I know a few people who have this way of talking as a default and it's slowly driving mad.
