Depends on the visual novel. I know there are parts of the Internet that freaking love Fate Stay Night, and every once in a while someone gushes over Saya no Uta. I think there's some game about time travel and cell phones that also gets recommended.

I had a good friend in college who adored Fate/Stay Night (and Fate/Zero). I tried to get into them, and he downloaded one of them (whichever is the first one? I think it's F/SN) onto my computer, but I guess you have to play for like four hours to even get to a save point? and I was never motivated to do that lol

I thought you saved most visual novels by right-clicking to open up the menu. Maybe that's a recent development?

you can save at any time.....

I hate to break it to you, but those parts of the internet are a huge part of why visual novels and their fans are considered immature.

What exactly do you mean? I could interpret that in a couple of ways.

Some of the best story I've ever read where VN, so I totally understand you. I've read hundreds of books and still playing GOOD visual novels is one of the most breath taking experience for me.
I'll never have the courage to tell people that I decided to study japanese just to play VN (especially after playing Saya no Uta), but that's what I've done. No regrets.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I like them better because they have art and I'm a visual person, lol apparently that's a crime to book people

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Same. This is also why I prefer graphic novels and comic books to books. I like being able to SEE things while I'm reading.

It's funny, I'm the other way around. All the choices, and the "good ending" being dependent on them stress me out. With a book, I can sink into it and fully experience it, without having to worry that I just did something "wrong" and messed everything up.

Recs?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really thought about them, do you have any to suggest?

I really enjoyed Air Pressure, though it's a very short, slow-moving, and might take a while to "get." (Especially since I didn't get the one of the three endings that make everything come clear.) Once I looked up that ending though, it was a major, "HOLY SHIT" moment for me.

There's also Katawa Shoujo, which Sneak started and really enjoyed. Never finished it though. You play a newly disabled student going to a school for disabled kids. It was made by 4chan, of all places, but honestly, watching Sneak play it, it kinda made me wish I'd known more disabled people growing up. (Note: this game apparently does have porn in it, and it's plot-relevant, though we never got far enough to reach that point.

And I'm not quite sure if it counts as a VN, but Dangan Ronpa/Trigger Happy Havoc was AWESOME to watch a Let's Play of. I will never play it myself, because I don't have a PSP and the gameplay is such that I'd be REALLY bad at it, but I commissioned fanart of it, I loved it that much. It's about a school for the best of the best... and one ordinary sonuvabitch who gets chosen by raffle every year. You play this year's Mr. Good Luck, and you enter the school, only for EVERYTHING TO GO HORRIBLY WRONG! Demonic teddy bears and murder ensues.

Phoenix Wright is often described as a visual novel series, but it's got elements of adventure game if you want a bit of gameplay.

Saya No Uta (trigger warnings out the ass tho)
Dangan Ronpa
Hatoful Boyfriend (need to play through a few character storylines to get the full ending unlocked)
We Know the Devil (you'll probably need a guide to get the true ending)

There's a ton of VNs on Steam, including most of these

I want to really like visual novels, but every one I've gotten my hands on have either been
1.) Extreamly poorly translated
or
2.) Boring and bland as oatmeal.

I hope that since I'll have more free time this summer, I hope I'll be able to find one I like and devote some time to it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
The only VNs I've read are the Nitro+Chiral BL games, and though I enjoy them, they're sort of badly written. My Japanese isn't even all that great, and I still get really irritated by the repetition of certain turns of phrase you see in all the Nitro games... let's not even get into all the tired old BL cliches and constant rape.

I tried reading Fate/Stay Night, but it's so looooong and there's so much stuff that, if it had been a professionally-edited novel, would just have been edited OUT. So much totally unnecessary, trivial bullshit that's totally irrelevant to the plot. I just lost patience with it. Also, Shiro is obnoxious. I wish the entire thing were from Rin's standpoint. THAT would be an interesting story.

I guess my problem with the (admittedly limited selection) of VN that I have read is the bad writing; it's like shit-tier light novel level. And of course by that I mean most light novels are shit-tier.

Not to mention that a lot of the time, the decisions seem to be so weakly connected to the consequences... they just seem so random and pasted-on, like "take a photo of this or not?" and then it affects if some character dies later on. what? was I supposed to connect those two things? You're pretty much forced to consult the internet to see the ending you want.

I don't know, maybe I'm not reading the right stuff. I've heard Saya no Uta is good and it's definitely on my list. I'm into accepting any recs you have, I'm OK with hentai or BL, too.

oh, and if I didn't make it clear, I do speak Japanese, so I don't need fan translations or anything. I'm actually trying to read more stuff in Japanese lately. I will say that VNs tend to hold my attention more than print novels, maybe it's the voice-acting (not that all are voice-acted...).

VN recommendations? OP, or anyone else?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What the actual fuck is a visual novel? It doesn't sound like it even qualifies as a novel.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wanting to ask this question since the post went up. At first I thought they were talking like graphic novels, but then it started to sound like a choose your own adventure thing and then like a videogame, and WTF, videogames are not novels.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel it sounds like the amount of novel-ness varies.
