(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Anyone in the year 2016 can make music regardless of how they look. It has literally never in history been easier for anyone who wants to make music to do it, and you can release it without ever letting anyone see your face. That's not even taking into account the songwriting teams, session musicians, etc who work behind the scenes in the music industry.
If you want to talk specifically about the way that pop music works and who pop music prefers, sure, by all means, talk about that. If you want to have some narrative about authenticity, I agree, but I can see where you're coming from. But saying from music from the 70s and 80s is better because people who make great music but don't sing really well can't make music anymore? There is no relation to reality.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-20 03:50 am (UTC)(link)Agreed. There is an immense amount of really incredible music being made out there. But you have to go and search it out. Most of the stuff that you can rely on hearing because the radio forces it on you is not going to be all that great. I'm not saying that NO mainstream popular music is good - just that most of it isn't, so if that's your measuring stick, that's definitely going to lead to a skewed perception of modern music.
