Seriously? I love Nirvana's music and I find Kurt Cobain to be an incredibly intriguing figure - I've read books about him and watched documentaries - but objectively speaking he's not especially good looking.

Who are some people who are objectively good looking?

Young Brad Pitt. Young Tom Cruise. Young Johnny Depp.

And now you're going say, ew, they're so ugly.

They're certainly not my type. (NAYRT)

More to the point, though, there is no such thing as "objectively good looking".

NA

I think "objectively good looking" is basically a way of saying, "If you polled a large group of people, it's extremely likely that a significant percentage of those people would classify said person as good looking." In that context, "objectively good looking" is a useful term.

I describe people as objectively good looking all the time. Chris Hemsworth is the epitome of objectively good looking to me. Which is to say, his looks don't appeal to me in the least, but I still recognize that he has features which make it likely for him to be found good looking by a large percentage of the population.

Wouldn't the phrase "conventionally attractive" be more useful though? And without the implication that people who don't find those people attractive are objectively wrong? (because that implication is there by the very nature of the word "objective", whether you or I agree with it or not)

I'll give you Depp, but I've never been really attracted to Pitt or Cruise.

I do think Kurt Cobain was quite cute.

Personal taste is a big factor.

Seriously, at least in my case. I like them scruffy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh. I'm not a huge fan of the 90s grunge look, it's a bit too unwashed and unshaven for me. But Cobain had a beautiful face.
