Movies you weren't expecting to love

[personal profile] shortysc22 2016-05-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I watched "Begin Again" which stars Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Adam Levine, and CeeLo Green this past weekend. Mark Ruffalo works as an A&R guy for a label in NYC and discovers Keira Knightley and makes a demo with her in New York.

I was not expecting to love this movie as much as I did. I just watched it thinking it'd be something to keep me occupied in the afternoon, but I really loved it and love the music they chose for it.

I kept seeing it on Netflix and skipping past. I didn't realize it had Mark Ruffalo in it, now I might actually check it out!

I was not expecting to love Knocked Up. I hate most straight up comedies, and I have a particular dislike of Bro Comedies. Knocked Up, on the other hand, I absolutely loved, and I've seen it multiple times.

He's the main guy too, it's pretty much him and Keira Knightley the whole time.

See, for me, I didn't like Knocked Up because I went in with high expectations because of how much everyone loved and I wasn't impressed. To each their own.

Doom, the terrible video game movie. Watched it for Karl Urban but I somehow grew to love it.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I really, really did not like the first Captain America. I also didn't like his portrayal in the Avengers. But everyone was saying how awesome it was so I went to see it. And fell hard into the Steve Rogers fandom. :X

I was going to say, I know how much you love Winter Soldier, but I agree the first one is lackluster compared to Winter Soldier and Civil War.

Doom is so bad. It's honestly pretty hilarious. That FPS sequence was awesome, though. I wish Doom 3 had actually been like that -- though I guess Doom 2016 IS like that.

I've long said the real Doom movie is Event Horizon, though even that's a bit of a stretch -- after all, Doom is Aliens meets Evil Dead and it's difficult to make something serious and smart out of what's ultimately a ridiculous concept.

Pompeii. I only went to see it because I had just went through some stressful stuff and movies relax me. I genuinely enjoyed it. I saw it twice and bought the dvd.

I have had this saved on my DVR for a while and you've inspired me to finally watch it tonight!

Dredd - I like action films but I'm not a huge, huge fan. They generally don't stick with me, especially dystopian ones, but I love this film to pieces.

Star Wars TFA - I like the Star Wars movies but they're more my brother's thing. Wow do I love the new movie though. I love the new characters and I'm eating up all the news for the next movie as fast as I can find it.

Brother Bear - I hadn't heard anything about this so I assumed it was a low quality, maybe direct-to-video type Disney fic. I really loved it though. Canadian moose.

I really love TFA because I think it was the perfect balance of being its own movie, incorporated lots of humor and seriousness at the same time and was just a brilliantly done film.

I'll have to check out Dredd next!

Brother Bear is seriously underrated but an absolute gem of a movie, it has gorgeous animation, a solid story and nice music.

Brother Bear was a pleasant surprise for me too! It totally hit my angst-kink, haha. I kind of wish we could have a more... anime-style movie with the same plot and the angst ramped up to 11.
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the ending. But it was very beautifully animated. Would definitely rewatch.

Megamind.

I don't like the characters Will Ferrel plays at all but I absolutely loved Megamind and enjoyed every moment of it, it was just so much fun and did a nice spin on the Superhero thing. Also his character is surprisingly endearing for me, like I was expecting to hate the guy but I ended up really rooting for him.

I find Will Ferrell to be really hit or miss, I LOVED him in The Lego Movie, so maybe it's when he's a voice actor I like him better?

I'm always sad the Megamind fandom's not bigger, but I'm happy it's still going.

We watched Dark Star last week. I was expecting a mildly amusing mid-70s sci-fi flick with some philosophical bent to it. What I got was an outrageously funny film very much in the vein of pre-70s low-budget sci-fi and a brilliant, if indirect, satire of 2001.

Got dragged out to see Civil War this week. I love the MCU overall but I'm not a Cap fan and really only liked the Sam scenes from Winter Soldier (didn't like First Avenger at all).

Loved Civil War and now I desperately need more Bucky in my life. Also Sam needs to be in every MCU movie from now on.

I avoided watching Robin Hood: Men in Tights for a long time because it looked like the sort of stupid comedy I usually find annoying, but I ended up laughing the whole way through.

I went to Tomorrowland expecting a dumb kiddie movie and just wanted to ogle Hugh Laurie. I wound up loving the whole movie.
