Which 40K book, so I know what to avoid?

(not that I read anything other than Gaunt's Ghosts and Ciaphas Cain anyway)

I had to go find it and check but: Eldar Prophecy. It's just, blaaargh. Avoid it.

(I just wanted a cool book about one of my fave 40k races but nooooo, it had to be shit).

I've not heard of Gaunt's Ghosts, what's that about? And Ciaphas Cain seems like it's a lot of fun, I've not read them properly yet but my bf owns a copy and it's pretty enjoyable from what I've skimmed.

It's about a popular Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the one regiment he leads. The series follows them throughout a long campaign against Chaos. It's very much written in the style of the Sharpe series of historical war fiction novels by Bernard Cornwell; Gaunt is basically Sharpe in a Commissar's cap. It's a good read IMO, no surprise given it's Dan Abnett writing. Feels much more like a "regular" book than "genre fiction."

And Ciaphas Cain is just amazing, and IMO it's what the 40K franchise needs. So much of 40K is adamant about being as grimdark as possible; CC turns it all on its head for comedy.

Huh, that sounds kinda cool, might have to see if a friend has a copy I can borrow.

Yeah from all the grimdark in 40k Ciaphas Cain looks like a nice break.
