Yeah, it was one of Inception's inspirations. (The inception of Inception?) But while I enjoyed Inception on the first viewing, the more I watch it, the less I like it. I'm not entirely sure why--it just feels like there isn't much going on under the glitzy surface, you know? I find myself going, "but WHY?" in a way I don't with Paprika, even though Paprika is far more surreal and strange and nonsensical. It makes emotional sense, while Inception not so much, maybe.

I actually felt that way the first time I watched it.

I came out of the theatre going, "Well, that was cool, but it played out like something I would have written in high school." There wasn't much symbolism. There was no metanarrative. There wasn't really even a strong theme... it was just like WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF YOU COULD INTO SOME DREAMS!?!? IN. REAL. LIFE?!

I caught almost nothing at all about Paprika, but the social commentary was fucking strong with that one.

Yeah, I was told by trusted friends to just see Inception as a heist story, because the headspace stuff was such old hat stuff to us. (So much stuff you can do, so many loopholes to exploit... *sigh*)

Paprika is just CRAMMED with stuff... nature vs. technology, the nature of identity and the id, guilt and longing, media's role in all of it... I swear I catch new things in it every time I watch it, and I love Satoshi Kon's way of showing it all.

Plus, you know, strong subtext the title character is multiple, but that's just me.

Yes! It's not just you.

One of the immediate thoughts I had while watching it was, "Oh, LB is showing this to us because it's a realistic representation of life with DID. Of course that's why they chose this for a stream."

Edit: Obviously I didn't mean the weird surreal shit as "realistic" lol. I just realized that could be misinterpreted. Derp. I hope you get what I mean here.

Yeah, plus a multiple who's actually something other than an axe-murderer or a helpless victim! Instead, THEY are the therapist helping others, not the one being helped! I love that!

And obviously while things do get trippy as hell, I feel like Paprika actually shows more about how psychological reality isn't the same as corporeal reality. Paprika takes on numerous forms throughout the film to try and elude pursuers or search more effectively, and it's clear that the psychological world doesn't follow the same rules. Inception at least TRIES to go there, but in my opinion, Paprika does it way better and more fluidly. It takes full advantage of the powers of animation, which I feel Inception just couldn't match, being live-action.
