(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 01:15 am (UTC)(link)Young Man to Old Man: Listen, I've been studying Talmud for five years and you know what? I'm an atheist.
Old Man: You little pisher, you've only been studying for five years and you already think you're allowed to call yourself an atheist?!
As to the cross/vampire discussion above, the version of the joke my Mother always tells me is that a vampire bursts into a woman's room and she holds up a cross. Vampire looks at her and says, "Lady, svert nit gornisht helfn." ("Lady, that ain't gonna help ya.")
(That's probably not correct Yiddish though, sorry. It just sounds so much funnier that way.)

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)I love that joke.
Also I'm from germany and I love hearing yiddish expressions and phrases in english because it's the cutest german dialect ever and I'm so happy it survived with the people who made it out of nazi-occupied europe in time.
Sadly, the joke wouldn't work in german except maybe with a few old folks because we don't know what yiddish sounds like, anymore.

Yiddish isn't a German dialect!
(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)Honestly, that's just so insulting of you to say this nonsense. Yiddish is part of Jewish heritage, not Germanics as an ethnic group. So of course the average German won't understand it! If anything, the younger generations of Jewish people won't understand it because of the lack of use and its dying status.
Re: Yiddish isn't a German dialect!
(Anonymous) 2016-05-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)the way I see it your view on this topic is clouded by either some sort of invented tradition Jewish self image construction that negates the very diverse Jewish identities that existed in Europe or by some sort of assumption that I'm an evil German trying to appropriate Jewish culture.
Also the reference to Germans not understanding it is not about the language. Most people would simply assume though that it's a weird variety of the Pfalz or rhinish dialect, because it's perfectly intelligible (the specific sentence used in the joke), though most would not recognize it for something specifically Jewish and just not get the joke.
