I'm an atheist but I dig big ol' jewelled crucifixes because they make me feel like a vampire hunter.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What if the vampire is an atheist too, though? Or suppose they are a really old vampire and believed in a religion that no longer exists apart from them and we don't know its holy symbol? So many questions.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then you bring a big bag and carry lots of talismans.

they actually touched on this in a movie, "The Fearless Vampire Killers: Or, Pardon me but your fangs are in my neck" [yes, that's the full title, although, most use "The Fearless Vampire Killers"]. If my memory serves, and it's been an age since I've seen it, they tried to use a crucifix on one of the recent turned vampires and he gives them "the fuck you thinking, I'm of a different religion!"

In the Marvel Universe it depends on the faith of the person wielding the symbol - so Kitty Pryde turned aside Dracula with her Star of David necklace.

Kind of depends on the mythos

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
da

If you're following the "Dracula/Vlad the Impaler was the first vampire" mythos, then yes, a crucifix (and other Christian symbology) would work as his history is entwined with Christianity (Vlad's father was vested into a fellowship of knights sworn to defend Christendom. Vlad allied himself with Matthias Corvinus, who received gold from the Pope Pius II to gather an army and purchase warships when the Pope called for a crusade against the Ottomans. Corvinus later shifted his loyalties and betrayed Vlad - he ordered Vlad's arrest, claiming that he was actually in league with the Turks.)

And if you go with Judas as the first, then, hell yes.

Also, vampires tend to be regarded as unholy or evil in a lot of mythos, so it may not matter what religion the vampire was.

I was raised Catholic and I don't care about this cultural appropriation, LOL. And neither does Madonna. Hey, goths.

Though I'm not sure if a cross would work against vampires if you didn't believe in it as a symbol of God. Maybe it would work if the vampire feared it in any case.

I'm probably putting too much thought into this.

Depends on the universe.

Sometimes it's the user's faith (ex: Marvel universe), sometimes it's the vampire's faith (Fearless Vampire Killers), sometimes neither matters, and either the cross works regardless (Buffy), or never works at all (Twilight).

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's his family's culture. What is he taking away from anybody?

Madonna isn't Catholic

A crucifix isn't the same as a cross

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do your research.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember reading about women who didn't consider themselves Muslims anymore but still wear the hijab out of cultural solidarity, so this seems like kinda the same thing?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not Muslim, but I am a transwoman and sometimes a Burqa actually helps daily life. SO go with what you like for whatever reason does it for you.

probably troll but

It makes sense to me that an agnostic person who was raised in Christianity would wear a cross, but I admit I'm baffled why an atheist would wear a religious symbol, specifically and only related to a religion, of any kind. "A claim to his family's huguenot roots" doesn't make much sense to me, since he has apparently repudiated the religion that his ancestors' religious identity came from. It's not like he ever KNEW any of them, iirc the huguenots lived in the 17th century.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for him, but I wear them because they're pretty.

You're the only intelligent person in this thread

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Really. This fascination with allowing people to wear things that have nothing to do with them is always one sided (ex "Fuck you SJWs! I wear what I want versus an actual discussion). Why exactly would anyone wear this? Cross means Christianity. Always has and always will. But an athiest wearing this is like the people who wear American flag themed clothing despite hating America or someone wearing a star of David despite not being Jewish at all or having any connection to Judaism.

Christianity isn't inherited. It's a religion. Having a necklace that "claims" your ancestor's past beliefs is just stupid. This isn't like some white kid inheriting a dreamcatcher from his great(X10) grandmother as part of "Native heritage." It's a religion that he has nothing to do with. But then again, it's not the end of the world if he wears a cross.

That's kind of cool, OP!
I read about a village of Huguenots in WWII France that saved a ton of Jewish people from the Nazi. (It was in Malcom Gladwell's latest book.) I don't blame him for being proud of a heritage that produces such bravery and principle.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-22 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not his heritage. It's just what his ancestors were. Do you know what heritage is? Ethnic groups, race, various traits, diseases, etc. Religion is not part of heritage because you CAN'T inherent a religion. The only exception is Judaism because it's also an ethnic group. Do you know how idiotic some people sound when they say they're "half-muslim" or put down their race as "roman catholic?"

Hey, I never begrudge a Jew their Star of David, and we have so many atheists that we actually have a standard they need to meet to be respected as a proper atheist. At least, that's how the joke goes:

Young Man to Old Man: Listen, I've been studying Talmud for five years and you know what? I'm an atheist.

Old Man: You little pisher, you've only been studying for five years and you already think you're allowed to call yourself an atheist?!

As to the cross/vampire discussion above, the version of the joke my Mother always tells me is that a vampire bursts into a woman's room and she holds up a cross. Vampire looks at her and says, "Lady, svert nit gornisht helfn." ("Lady, that ain't gonna help ya.")

(That's probably not correct Yiddish though, sorry. It just sounds so much funnier that way.)

lol
I love that joke.
Also I'm from germany and I love hearing yiddish expressions and phrases in english because it's the cutest german dialect ever and I'm so happy it survived with the people who made it out of nazi-occupied europe in time.
Sadly, the joke wouldn't work in german except maybe with a few old folks because we don't know what yiddish sounds like, anymore.

Crosses predate Christianity so I wear them whenever the fuck I want. Christians are always thinking everything is ALL ABOUT THEM*

*On the other hand you could say the same thing about swastikas and nazis and I wouldn't wear a swastika. But I don't have a big problem with people assuming I'm a christian.
