This is such a weird thing to say because ... if you seriously decide not to befriend a person because they like a fictional character on fucking ridiculous Star Wars of all fandoms, the problem lies with you and not with anyone else.
Like, I wouldn't want to be close friends with someone this incapable of separating fandom fun with real life.
But damn, you will have a very limited circle of friends if the only ones in there are people who have all the exact same taste in characters (and side characters) as you.

Liking shallow, empty characters and literal Nazi allusions is questionable.

Thinking that liking a side character in an OTT space opera fandom says anything at all about the character of a real person, that's the shallow thing here.

"I-it's an OTT space opera, s-so it's totally acceptable I go for the bland Nazi character with literally no personality or depth over actual characters!!"

Going for the shallowest character in a pool of average to shallow characters still reflects badly on you. Just admit you're a pleb who prefers empty characters to project on and be done with it.

You make two major mistakes here: the first being thinking I actually care what some pseudo elitist anon thinks about me and the second being projecting your opinion of a character on everyone else, pretending it's some sort of universal truth because you feel in some way morally superior. And oh hey, a third and equally major mistake here: you actually seem to think that I take liking a character in any way shape or form as serious as you take your perceived righteous indignation.

kek so denial ridden. At least other Hux fans admit there's no real reason to like the guy beyond headcanon bullshit they read in fanfic/shipping purposes. Literally what reason is their to have this bland character with only 2 minutes of screen time as your favorite? Plenty people liked Boba Fett, mostly because of the apparently cool design and also because of a lot of the additional material about him. Liking him is comparable to liking Phasma, actually. Hux is more comparable to Tarkin.
I like Hux because he is a foil to Kylo Ren and because I really liked his portrayal in the novelisation.

You know, the funniest thing about this is that the only person assuming I have some super convulted deep reason for liking him is you. It's not so much wanting someone with the exact same tastes as you, but rather avoiding people like Snape/Loki fangirls, many of whom are now Kylo and Hux fangirls. Having come across ardent Loki apologists, their perception of morality and critical thinking is incredibly skewed and alarming, and I've seen that applied to Kylo/Hux now. Yes, fiction=/= real life, but I don't really wanna befriend people on tumblr who spend hours writing essays on why *insert villain here* didn't do anything wrong while demonizing morally good characters. I also don't care for all the headcanons being inserted into Hux and others acting like he's not as flat as he really is, it gives me flashbacks to the Clint Barton/ClintCoulson fandom. It also screams "white cock worshipping" to me.

No it's not if you paid any attention to the things going on in that fandom.

This change that went on after the first couple of months in the fandom does worry me. And yes, I do know about the supposed drama and have seen another side to it.

Actually, the Hux side of fandom is pretty much the exact opposite of what you described- the vast, vast majority is completely aware that he's an evil genocidal asshole and does not even try to justify what he did. If you absolutely want to compare it with the Snape/Loki apologists, that happens much more with Kylo fans (especially in the Reylo setup, much less in the Kylux corner of things).

And no, Clint/Coulson is not comparable because compared to that ship, Kylo and Hux definitely have more canon interaction to fall back on, no matter how much you want to deny it.

Kylo apologists make sense to me in Star Wars fandom; I mean, Darth Vader was redeemed before he died. The only canon that I can think of that is more forgiving to its characters' villainy is Naruto.

Speaking as someone in the Reylo part of the fandom, a lot of the excuses I see for Kylo Ren are of two types: an overreaction to anti-Reylo criticisms and/or people who point out that Kylo's crimes are not as extensive as others try to make them out to be. I don't see blind devotion "Kylo Ren did nothing wrong" posts except as a joke.

Ah, thank you for that clarification. It does make sense that a lot of people go OTT in the other direction if faced with such insane negativity. It's the main reason Kylux went from cracky niche-ship to flagship - because there was such a massive amount of policing going on, particularly in the Stormpilot ship, that people decided "fuck this shit I'm out" and switched sides because if there's one thing the Kylux fandom is, it's super chill and forgiving about just about any kink etc. (the biggest conflict there used to be "who tops").

The main thing I have seen was a number of Kylo fans do this thing that is very reminiscent of the "Loki was brainwashed as well during the Avengers and thus is not to blame": "Kylo was brainwashed by Snoke when he killed the other apprentices."

Considering the movie mentions Snoke having been kinda sorta there for a while, there might be a grain of truth in that theory. But that's where you get the people who go a bit OTT - there is a difference between "Kylo was influenced to a certain extent but he's still to blame for the people he killed" and "it was all Snoke and Kylo is just an innocent brainwashed bystander who is not to blame for what he did". I have seen both, and the latter is very close to "Kylo Ren did nothing wrong" - but it is definitely not the majority opinion.

People like seeing Kylo redeemed because the way he is written, it defnitely is a canon possibilty (even if it is a "redemption in death" like with Vader). I have seen massively woobiefied Kylo, but not nearly as much as there was woobiefied Loki.

Agreed. I think part of the problem is how much we still don't know about Kylo Ren's past, so people can interpret what little we do have and come up with only exculpatory/inculpatory evidence based on their biases.

I was hoping Bloodline would help, but it blew up the "Kylo turned at 15" theory and gave us nothing else, lol.

Oh yeah, Bloodline actually created some massive ripples in the "Kylo turned at 15" crowd (I wasn't too hot on it either when I first heard about it but now, I think it may be even more interesting).
Eh, I think they're not going to give us any real new and important background material about the new main characters before VIII comes out.

I'm not comparing Clint/Coulson to Kylux, I'm comparing Hux to Clint, as the phenomenon of a bland non-character (like Clint and Hux) becoming the fandom darling. And I've seen a huge amount of Hux humanizing and woobiefication, hell the most popular Kylux fic (done by Hollycomb) is basically one giant Draco in Leather Pants fic. This idea that the Kylux section of fandom is completely infallible is rather ridiculous.

With the exception that Clint had less screen time and lines than Hux and not a bigger novelisation presence. And again, I never said anything along the lines of Hux being the deepest and most complex character evarrrr.

Oh yeah, I really hate that Hollycomb fic series. But one popular fic series doesn't equal "Hux gets woobiefied across the board to the extent Loki did" - I never said it doesn't ever happen, just not nearly as often as with Loki ( considering there was da time every third to second Loki fic was either "Loki gets abused by Odin and or Thor" or "Loki gets captured and tortured/experimented on/raped") and not more than any other character in the fandom.

And if you can tell me where I called the fandom infallible I'd be much obliged- because I didn't. But compared to the other big ships, it is by far the least wanky and most chill.

I am not defensive but if you can't tell the difference between a discussion and being defensive it probably might seem this way. You made a point that didn't make sense because the comparison you made was an incorrect one. You also argued "white cock worship". I disagree on both accounts because it's untrue, plain and simple.

I have to agree. Using someone's liking of a fictional character even if it's for shallow reasons as proof of some great character flaw seems like the kind of bizarre leap in logic I only seem to find in fandom circles.

Okay, but I am, personally, deeply uncomfortable with the Empire/First Order fandom for the same reason I'm uncomfortable with the people who run around shouting "hail Hydra!" and wearing Hydra pins in Marvel fandom. They're both Nazi allegories (in Hydra's case, literally an offshoot of Nazis) and they're not subtle about it. That's my point.

If someone's favorite character is Hux, fine, they can like whatever they want. I'm not taking him away from them. But what I saw in the movie was a Nazi officer who made me so uncomfortable every time he appeared that I couldn't wait for him to be gone, and if another person found that interesting in some way, well, that tells me that that person is not the kind of person I want to engage with on a friendship level. And I'm okay with that.
