In my experience people are more attached to fandom discourse and criticizing everything when they are bored compared to when they've got a lot of other stuff going on. The busier you are with school or work the less important fandom stuff feels so you are more likely to just have fun with it than take it seriously.

I think that might be why a lot of tumblr SJW crowd is usually 13-17 year old kids with no responsibilities or life experience. I see more college students worried about their next exam or essay and just use fandom to take a break.
