IDK man I also want to relax at the end of a long day. But I don't mind that other people approach fandom differently, and I don't think it has any intrinsic validity to it. Some people just feel differently and more intensely about stuff than I do, and that's okay, and I can deal with it. Really not sure how to take your attitude of superiority here.

I also don't necassarily find critical conversation to be un-relaxing per se, but ymmv.

+1

I'm one of those super intense people about things - and often times not even something on the problematic spectrum - so people being oversensitive or hellbent on their single mindset of positivity "ALL THE TIME!!!" really irritate me.

If their fandom friends are relentlessly angry and do nothing but yell and complain (I've been in fandom spaces like that), it's not especially surprising they wouldn't find that relaxing, and preferring to spend one's unwinding time otherwise than involving oneself with relentlessly angry yelling complaining people is hardly what I would call an "attitude of superiority."

There seems to be an increasing movement against hyper-criticizing in fandom. I've seen an uptick in posts, comments, and stories that are about people being tired of feeling like they have to always talk about how problematic a person or thing is. They just want to enjoy a show/movie/game/book/person without having to list all the things that is problematic about it.

It's a pendulum swing--everything was THE BEST, then everything was subject to critique, then everything was UNFORGIVABLY PROBLEMATIC, and now even that is very exhausting

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda think you just have to know how to discuss those things without constantly being dialed up to 10 about it all the time. I mean this is just in my experience, but I think the people who approach those issues productively irl are more likely to have more of a critical but not completely negative presence in fandom while the really intense meta spitting is from people who are trying to win social points in fandom by hating the thing more than the next person.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense.

When I started easing my way out of a particular fandom, I cut ties with one of the most ardent members. I just couldn't take dealing with her intensity anymore.

Fandom's supposed to be fun, not a chore. When it stops being fun, there's no shame in leaving.

Nothing wrong with deciding you're not getting what you want out of your fandom time and friends. I hope you can find some people who are looking for the same things from fandom as you are.

You sound like someone in a toy fandom.

The amount of people being personally offended that people don't like changes or dolls is rising and frankly, it's irritating. If you're an adult and you can't ignore a dissenting opinion...you didn't really grow up in more ways than one I see.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Do it! Life is way too short to be surrounded by killjoys, and boy oh boy, do some of the young'uns act like sucking the fun out of life is their true calling.

Well, I personally am sure that I'm way more likely to be disgruntled and hard to please about fandom stuff when there is also hectic important stuff going on in my life. But that's why I choose my days when it's time to back away for a while.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. My grandmother recently passed away and her will named me the executor of her estate, which has been an ungodly amount of stress and hard work and petty annoyances on top of, you know, my grandmother dying which I'm pretty cut up about. And I find myself having seriously over-the-top reactions lately to stuff in fandom that I'd ordinarily find annoying but that now feels like the worst thing ever.

I'm torn. For the most part I agree with you. Fandom should be a fun and chill environment, but I can understand not being satisfied with the way things are and feeling the need to vent about it.

tbh I have been trying to find new fandoms where I can just chill and not worry about fandom drama or discourse, but I haven't found one yet.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
In my experience people are more attached to fandom discourse and criticizing everything when they are bored compared to when they've got a lot of other stuff going on. The busier you are with school or work the less important fandom stuff feels so you are more likely to just have fun with it than take it seriously.

I think that might be why a lot of tumblr SJW crowd is usually 13-17 year old kids with no responsibilities or life experience. I see more college students worried about their next exam or essay and just use fandom to take a break.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Idk, I get worked up about fictional stuff (and bigger political issues that don't effect me directly) partially to avoid thinking about nasty rl stuff that I deal with all the time. It's easier than facing the latest awful problem head on, but it's probably not healthy.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, replace "students" with "people who don't study and have no jobs or very undemanding ones" and - I feel you :(

I've noticed a difference between people in fandom who are still in school or in lower-end jobs* and the ones with careers. I don't know if it's because fandom is a cheap hobby and people with careers have more money to spend on other things, or because being older is correlated with having a career and the older you are the fewer fucks you have to give about inconsequential stuff like fandom.

*long version: y'all know someone in their late 20s working a dead end retail job and living in their parents' basement with no life aspirations past paying for the next con/DVD boxset/figurine/etc.

I don't agree.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'd argue that sports is just as inconsequential (though both the sports and the entertainment industries are billion dollar businesses) and I've seen plenty of older fans clearly giving all the fucks. People get upset at the (non)decoration of coffee cups. I think some people just like creating drama. I would agree that more younger fans seem prone to it and some do grow out of it, but some really, really don't.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
If you feel that way move on. I did that not that long ago. Although it wasn't a clean break per se. I created a new tumblr and followed the people who were mostly positive and ignored the less positive people. I've been happier. Sometimes you have to move on from certain fandom friends. I have a handful of fandom friends I'll always have but it's like real life. Some people are only meant to be in your life a short time while others will be there for a long time.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I feel the same. Nothing is perfect or turning out the way THEY wanted it, and it's a big ol' bitchfest, and it gets so very, very wearing. I start backing away and looking for some other pretty to get my free time.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
serious question: is it only the bigger fandoms that go into outrage mode or turn fandom things political? the fandom I'm mostly into is more than a decade old and pretty small by tumblr standards, sometimes I wish it was bigger but I can only imagine the wank that would apparently come with that...

Do it. If you're not finding one circle interesting go find one that is :) don't waist your time plodding through stuff you don't care for.
