Honestly, using a crockpot for things is great if you have tons of time but can't be there to supervise directly, but if you're going to be home and able to supervise, cooking it on the stovetop will probably be faster, anyway. I assume your recipe is some variation of "throw everything in the crockpot and cook it for 8 hours". You can do that on the stove. Bring everything to a boil using medium-high heat, then turn it down to a low simmer (little bubbles rising to the surface only, not a full boil), put the lid on and check it after an hour. You won't need as much as time as you would with a crockpot.
