Dog and thunderstorms

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How can I relax my 80 pound my during thunderstorms. The shirt things don't work with him. I want other options before medication.

Pacing, panting, clinging to me, shaking.

My dog was always terrified during storms. He'd usually go hide under things if he could. Holding him and just speaking softly and comfortingly while petting him would help some.

My dog usually goes to hide, unless I keep petting him. That seems to calm him down. He's a small dog though, so I can have him on my lap, which makes it easier to be constantly touching him.

My dog used to stick her head under the couch and "hide." She still thought she was a puppy, I guess.

She never really got over her fear, but it helped if we kept her close and were encouraging to her. If we gave her something to gnaw on, it could work as a distraction (rawhide).

She did learn to stop being scared of fireworks, because watching fireworks was a social time, and she could get into that.

You could start a desensitisation program? There are videos on youtube 10 hours long of thunder. Assuming it's the sound setting him off and not the vibrations, static, wind etc.

This link seems to have some good suggestions further down

My dog got really panicky during storms. It helped if you took her to a room where she couldn't pace around, and couldn't see lightning. This usually meant taking her to the bathroom, closing the door, and sitting with her. Granted, that wasn't a lot of fun, but it kept her from going crazy. (Obviously I do not recommend putting her in the bathroom by herself.) Also, you could sometimes trick the dog. Going into the bedroom, closing the door and the curtains, and listening to loud music that drowned out thunder before she really heard it. Though any really close thunder would alert her. The loud music never bothered her, though.

What should I make GIFs of off this list? http://i.imgur.com/aQe0t3f.png

Any ideas/requests are welcome (though no guarantee I will make them). I also have Avengers:AOU that I will probably make a Trivia set of.

Re: Questions or Advice

Giving him a place to hide is a good idea, like how other commenters said their dogs try to hide - a safe place, a crate, a bed in a quiet corner, under a blanket, wherever he feels safe - but don't PUT him in a crate when he's scared, just let him go where he feels safe.

Comforting him when he's anxious is paradoxically counterproductive. It reinforces the behavior. I know it's hard not to cuddle them and tell them it's okay, but the dog is just going to learn that he gets rewarded with extra attention for the behavior, and he'll want to do it every time he hears thunder.

I saw it! I don't cuddle on him or anything. I usually try to get him to hang out near me on his bed instead.

Drinking Alone?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Is it bad to drink alone by yourself. I rarely drink. But tonight I decided to stay home, watch some shitty movies, and drink by myself. I happened to mention to my mom I am doing this and she was all, "You are drinking...by yourself?" in a grossed out tone.

As long as you're not purposely doing it to self-medicate on a regular basis, I don't see what's wrong with having a nice pinot noir (or whatever you're drinking) and relaxing with some movies.

You aren't hiding your drinking or drinking yourself blackout regularly I assume, so I see no problem. Sometimes you just don't wanna go out.

Seconding what the first anon said, and offering an additional reminder: moms are for making you feel guilty about making your own decisions

I see nothing wrong with this. Do you live alone? Then I see absolutely nothing wrong. You're not hiding it and as long as it's not a daily occurrence to the point of blacking out, I still see nothing wrong with it.

No? Your mom sounds weirdly judgey. I literally just finished a beer by myself in my apartment and I know lots of other people do it too. It is not unusual.

As long as you're not downing a fifth of vodka all by your lonesome, I don't see a problem. Actually downing a fifth of vodka with company is still not a great idea. For me it's really about the quantity.
