Dog and thunderstorms

(Anonymous) 2016-05-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How can I relax my 80 pound my during thunderstorms. The shirt things don't work with him. I want other options before medication.

What kind of reactions does he have?

Pacing, panting, clinging to me, shaking.

My dog was always terrified during storms. He'd usually go hide under things if he could. Holding him and just speaking softly and comfortingly while petting him would help some.

My dog usually goes to hide, unless I keep petting him. That seems to calm him down. He's a small dog though, so I can have him on my lap, which makes it easier to be constantly touching him.

My dog used to stick her head under the couch and "hide." She still thought she was a puppy, I guess.

She never really got over her fear, but it helped if we kept her close and were encouraging to her. If we gave her something to gnaw on, it could work as a distraction (rawhide).

She did learn to stop being scared of fireworks, because watching fireworks was a social time, and she could get into that.

You could start a desensitisation program? There are videos on youtube 10 hours long of thunder. Assuming it's the sound setting him off and not the vibrations, static, wind etc.

This link seems to have some good suggestions further down

My dog got really panicky during storms. It helped if you took her to a room where she couldn't pace around, and couldn't see lightning. This usually meant taking her to the bathroom, closing the door, and sitting with her. Granted, that wasn't a lot of fun, but it kept her from going crazy. (Obviously I do not recommend putting her in the bathroom by herself.) Also, you could sometimes trick the dog. Going into the bedroom, closing the door and the curtains, and listening to loud music that drowned out thunder before she really heard it. Though any really close thunder would alert her. The loud music never bothered her, though.
