Marvel does like to play with music lately.

They can afford to just throw money around.

You could probably thank Guardians of the Galaxy for that one. After the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 became pure lightning in one bottle, it seems like Marvel Studios is trying to catch more of it.

I think it's down to a couple things... firstly, that filmmakers really want to inject the music they love into the work they make, and secondly, that companies are willing to pay for it because their target demographic is super into hearing the music of their youth in mainstream movies now.

it was just so gosh-darn refreshing.

it was cute and fun and optimistic, and genuinely FUNNY, not just quippy, and I really loved that the final climax was just one dude vs another dude with a kid's life on the line. no BIGGEST CONFRONTATION EVER!!! NOT A DREAM!! NOT AN ELSEWORLDS!!! ACTUALLY THE END OF THE WORLD FOR REAL THIS TIME!!!!

As far as comic films making excellent use of music goes, I thought that Watchmen set the bar particularly high.

Eh, they did all right. Points for using Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin'" in a relevant montage. But frankly, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is not a terribly original choice (even Cohen requested a moratorium on its use in films!) and setting it as the backdrop of a painfully bad sex scene between Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II kind of spoiled it.

That is an amazing song! As a huge Cure fan, I was excited to hear it in the movie too. :)
