49. Oh man, you should go to board I post at. Most of us love it, but we have a terrible base of fanboys that just hate popular things. I don't think its the greatest ever, but I certainly hail it as wonderful. Unless you are a total stiff, I don't see how anyone else could not like the fast-pace, upbeat series this series has. And while we're going on, one of my friends refuses to get past the first episode because McDonalds was a sponser.. -_-!

Ghibli is always wonderful in its presentation-- top notch animation, voice acting, music-- but compared to the storytelling and writing to say his many other classic films (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies), its very weak and confusing. And, as you can see, many are not satisfied with its adaption. I agree too that the ending and character development was practically rushed at the end.

However, this reminds me though-- even as one of his weakest films, its still presented so well.

Perhaps it's just me, then, and my lack of knowledge about movies ^^;
But for me it was a good movie, and I intend to live in ignorant bliss about the various details so I'll be able to enjoy it without thinking critically. Thanks for the explanation, though!

Serious movie critics (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050609/REVIEWS/50601002/1023). Yeah, HMC reaped full scores a lot of places for being "another Miyazaki masterpiece", but I noticed a trend of far less excitement among the movie reviewers whose opinions I actually trust (all two of them). And much as I adored that movie (which was a lot), I do see where they are coming from.

Not anymore. Seen Ged's War?

It's lovely, really, visually beautiful, and although technically directed by his son is still very much a Miyazaki movie, but, and this is as direct a quote as I can recall offhand, according to Ursula LeGuin and her son: "This is a lovely movie, but it is his movie, not my Earthsea."

--That said it is a visual treat, as usual, but the storytelling is...weak at best.

Um, if it's not directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it's not very much a Hayao Miyazaki movie. On the contrary, Hayao had major reservations as to if his son was ready to direct. It was Goro's project, not Hayao's.

He did have reservations, that's true, but the further they went into the project, the less those reservations became, and ultimately, there is still the strong touch of the elder Miyazaki, especially in terms of nuance, in the film.

I do recommend watching it, if only for the visuals. It is absolutely lovely.

Do you have any quotes to support that? No offense but... that's just not the consensus I came away with. There have supposedly been issues between the two for years.

And a touch of the elder Miyazaki doesn't mean it was his hand in it, it would likely just mean they were inspired by him or even tried to copy him a bit subconsciously. But really it's no more a Miyazaki movie than any other studio Ghibli movie not directed by Hayao.

It's just that... Goro's the only one who produced a movie that wasn't really good (even if visually lovely).
