Re: Gorilla is killed when child falls into gorilla pen.

People blaming the parents are annoying. Yes, parents need to watch their kids, but kids can and do escape.

The zoo should have better barriers. They must know that a lot of kids come there. A toddler shouldn't be able to get into a cage.

There are child leashes.

Right? You make proper accommodations if you know your child is slippery.

Seriously. Some kids are good and will do what they are told. Others are little hellions who will get into anything and everything. Part of being a parent is knowing which one your kid is and treating them appropriately.

We can't really tell what type of kid he was from just one incident, though. Some kids are good and will do what they're told most of the time but will still occasionally disobey.

Huh. My culture considers them barbaric and borderline illegal restraints. Also I doubt they really offer more safety. Just more control. You can yank your kid around on them and shame parents who don't.

So is it barbaric and borderline illegal when I take my cat out for a walk on her leash and harness?

Also I doubt they really offer more safety.

Keeps my cat safe, why wouldn't it keep a kid safe?

Well... people don't do that with cats where I live. It's against their natural behavior and if it looks like the cat is pulling on it a lot you might even get in trouble for animal abuse. But that's not the issue. Children have human rights and stuff like bring preemptively restrained against your will is in conflict with them. I say borderline because in some cases it *can* be helpful ore more safe.

It's against their natural behavior

You would be surprised, they get used to wearing a harness very quickly and don't mind putting it on, since it means they get to go on their walk :)

if it looks like the cat is pulling on it a lot \

I haven't really seen this myself. Leashed cat behavior (at least with my cats) is different from leashed dog behavior. Cats are much more leisurely and don't seem to have the impression that if they pull hard enough, they can drag you along wherever they like, LOL. If really want to go somewhere you don't want them to go, you don't need to pull or yank them. Just begin inching your way down the lead, scoop them up, and carry them off somewhere else and they'll forget about their earlier goal.

Children have human rights and stuff like bring preemptively restrained against your will is in conflict with them

By that logic wouldn't holding your child be "preemptively restraining them against their will"?

what kind of child leash are you talking about? when I was little my parents put one on my wrist in a busy airport. I just looked at it, peeled it right off and ran off

Something like this: http://www.childharness.ca/images/2chest_strap/handle.jpg

Although I find the construction of that one inadequate. I'd want one that also ties around the legs like a platform harness: https://forklift-accessories.indoff.com/media/FRK/catalog/900.gif

Probably best to hand-make or modify one.

I definitely don't think those'd work for all kids, but I hope they're helpful to some. I probably would have pitched a giant fit if you'd try to put that on my body as a toddler lol. But that doesn't mean I think they're bad things. I'd definitely feel better about a kid's safety if they were wearing one.

People blaming the parents are annoying. Yes, parents need to watch their kids, but kids can and do escape.

It's still the parents' fault, because if they'd raised the kids right to begin with the kids wouldn't "escape".

We went to the zoo all the time when I was a kid and because my mom actually did her damn job as a parent and educated us on how to behave in public, especially when we were in a situation with dangerous large animals around, there was never an issue.

If you build a zoo that assumes every kid there will always be well-behaved, you've built a shitty fucking zoo.

Yeah, you obviously don't have kids. Children have something called personalities, and unless you force them to "bevhave" like you want them to with violence there will be children who do not do what they're told despite anything a parent does.
