So, I don't even read comics and I am still aware that even the writers can't stand One More Day. I'm pretty sure they've been on a 'Let's at least be better than that screw up' ever since, there's got to be something else good in the archives. Comics are so vast and expansive, especially Marvel, and One More Day was a long time ago. I'm sure there's something you'll like if you look for it.

I don't get why people are so whiny about this. This isn't the weirdest thing to happen in comics. Pretty sure similar plots have happened multiple times.

If you don't like it, wait 6 months when we find out he was possessed the whole time. He will be better by the time the next Avengers movie comes out.

It makes me think that this is the first comic they have ever read and that they don't really know how comics works. (Think "Tom & Jerry". No one gets upset when Tom is split in pieces, flattened and torn inside-out, because he will be all-right again in the next episode.)

There are arguments for why it sucks even based on the assumption that it's a temporary shock plot, but okay.

the funny thing is, that actual issue mentions Steve being a werewolf (google it, it happened), so it IS self-aware, and it will surely make room for something else a few months from now.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it completely fucks up Steves character and it goes against everything he was created for...?

Yeah it'll be retconned in a few months, but this stupid idea still got green lit and people have the right to be upset and annoyed.

This is a bit different from werewolf Cap: http://panels.net/2016/05/26/on-steve-rogers-1-antisemitism-and-publicity-stunts/

Mind, I'm not Jewish and haven't had any Jewish friends since middle school. I don't have any personal connection to this. I just think it's dumb, like when Magneto was herding people into ovens and then they retconned that it was actually someone called Xorn who thought he was Magneto.

I dunno, I'm actually curious about the Steve storyline? YES, they COULD fuck it up immensely, but it's only a first issue. I'm willing to hold out a bit longer. Bsides, they great thing about Marvel comics is, the span so many decades, and you can always find another storyline.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-02 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really torn about this entire wank. On one hand, the outcry over it seemed really hyperbolic to me (and as someone who does take Nazis and the Holocaust seriously, the direct line drawn between this dumbass comic book twist and historical genocide annoys me). On the other, I can see this being a really cynical shock twist and I don't think Marvel should be rewarded for tactics like that (yes, even if it's not new). So the entire debate over this is deeply irritating to me, from pretty much all sides. Oh comics.

I think there probably would have been a lot less rage around this if Marvel's publicity hadn't hyped it so much. I read the actual issue before hearing about it online and I was surprised but utterly intrigued and interested in seeing where the story was going, at least.

But, you know, they couldn't just let the work speak for itself, or talk about it after the story arc was done, they had to start explaining themselves immediately - ruining the intrigue and showing that they just DO NOT GET the character.

...Do you mean that literally, about Spidey? How do you sell a marriage to the devil...

[personal profile] sockes 2016-06-02 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They mean it literally, yep. One More Day is one of those stories that everyone hated but that no one has been able to retcon away (yet).

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Editor-in-chief Joe Quesada thought Spider-Man being married made him unrelatable to the comic's target audience, so he mandated a story where Spider-Man saved Aunt May from a gunshot wound by allowing Mephisto to erase his marriage and future child from the timestream. Spidey then got romantic implications with a character named after Quesada's daughter. Comic reviewer Linkara hated this story so much he put it in his theme song ("There would be better books on this show, but Quesada sold them to Mephisto.")

On the plus side, it gave us this series: http://www.platypuscomix.net/miscellaneous/index.php?issue=11&page=2&seriesID=7

Peter outed himself as Spiderman on national news and since everyone knew who he was, Aunt May was shot. Peter made a deal with Mephisto (the devil) to let Aunt May live.

So Mephisto wanted their marriage. They agreed and it was all retconned.

To me it just seems like it's done for pointless shock factor which I find :/

I was even considering buying this because I haven't picked up any Cap comics in a while but nah, I'll pass.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Caps fans are so extra. You'd think brainwashing wasn't something that occurred pretty regularly in CA titles. It's such an obvious temporary gimmick that I think it's ridiculous that people are actually getting genuinely upset over it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't want this to become as dark as DC, especially way back when DC unleashed New 52 onto our throats.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret? A lot of people quite over that. It was a stupid story decision executed terribly.

Also, this Cap thing will so blow over. Maybe not in the next six issues but he will dehydrate soon. This isn't half as bad as selling your marriage to the devil.

I feel this. I am pretty much out of the comics fandom entirely know cause its always been full of shit, but One More Day put a big dent in my enjoyment of them back in the day. Especially cause Spidey was my favorite character at the time.

I just got more and more disconnect and disinterested after that. And this Hydra!Cap thing is just making me think of One More Day every time I see stuff about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-03 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Marvel comics have been shit for years. They have a few titiles that are good but overall? Nah man. Their money comes from mcu fans who don't know better and bandwagoners. Like seriously. We're getting civil war 2 when nobody in their right mind would ever ask for that. But because casual fans are dumb marvel is convinced we want more SHITTY EVENT WHERE EVERYONE IS X written by Bendis/Hopeless/Slott/Aaron/Humphrees while the good writers flee to become independents or DC exclusive. And one more day is still a blight on spidey's history that will never recover from for as long as Quesada and his legion of creepy Gwen Stacey fans are around and running the show.

Say what you want about DC but not even nu52 was THIS fucking offensively stupid. At least that had some titles to offer as opposed to ANAD Marvel.

Okay, it's clearly a Red Skull reality manipulation thing. Like the time the same thing happened with Sam Wilson. The only color in the flashbacks was red? They name-dropped the cosmic cube about a dozen times? It's not a great story, and OP, there's no particular reason you should come back for this specific one.

Though there are some great comics being published. This just isn't one of them.
