Hobbit movies for me. And I've switched sides. When I first saw them, I thought I liked them in spite of all the bits I didn't like. Now I'm in the camp where I don't like them in spite of the few bits that I do like.

Harry Potter can be that way for me sometimes. Mostly the movies, but also the books.

For me it's the Lord of the Rings movies. I used to like them except for a few bits but now I hate a lot of what they did with only a few things I like.

I may end up in that camp eventually. There are more and more bits I don't like about them. I still love them, but more and more it is in spite of problems that now bug me.

I think the Hobbit movies are partly to blame for this. A lot of the problems in Lord of the Rings are magnified in the Hobbit. After watching how badly they were done in the Hobbit, I can't ignore them in the Lord of the Rings any more.

That's a good point. I also think that for me getting into the fandom more and reading the books more makes me notice things more. Like characters that I didn't have as good an understanding of before, now I understand why movie changes don't work as well as I thought they did.

nayrt

Oh yeah I get this. I thought the LOTR movies were amazing back when I had only read the books a couple times - not perfect, there were things that niggled at me just a tiny bit, but only really in a "nerdy" way, stuff I could easily brush off.

But the more I read the books (every two or three years or so) and/or the older I grow, the more I realize just how MUCH was left out of the movies, and just how many distinctions and nuances that make the book versions of certain characters, subplots, themes, elements, ideas, etc just sing are completely screwed up in the movie. And...IDK, it's getting harder and harder to dismiss them as just "nerdy" complaints, because honestly none of the things that bug me now are the silly little nerdy things like Tom Bombadil or the characters' ages or what the elves look like, they're the subtle literary things that change the underlying meaning of the themes and stuff.

I pretty much adore An Unexpected Journey, but The Desolation of Smaug is a mess and The Battle of the Five Armies is admittedly pretty awful as well. There are definitely bits I loved about the films, and despite those feelings I'm glad they were made because the visuals are lovely, the good bits are good (the cast was amazing, select scenes were stellar), and there's a shitton of shipping potential, but overall...yes, they were disappointing. I can understand why people might not like them.

Can I just say that you say this better than I ever could?

Some scenes were really so great. Especially some of the battle scenes, while kinda OTT, were excellently choreographed and just so damn awesome.

Same here.

After initially watching them I liked them but as time wore on the cracks just got bigger and bigger for me and now the only one I really like is An Unexpected Journey while the other two... eeeeh. I still love the characters though despite the movies being a mess.

I agree about the Hobbit films. When I first watched the first two Hobbit films, I didn't think I would like anything about them, but I ended up liking a few things about them, so I thought, "Yeah, they weren't a complete mess." But after Battle of the Five Armies, and some time passing, I've come to really dislike the whole Hobbit trilogies, and comparing it to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It's been awhile since I've re-read the HP books, I'm actually in the middle of re-reading them, I just finished Prisoner of Azkaban. I think they hold up well as children's books, but I wonder if the same can be said for the rest of the series, especially books 5-7 since they do grow a lot darker. I think it didn't seem so bad since most of us grew up with the books, but I wonder if the transition is that smooth if you read the book series all the way through in a shorter time span. For comparison, I like the progression of the Percy Jackson books. They seem to flow very well as the characters get older.

I've always teetered back and forth on the films, but for the most part, I don't like the films as much as other HP fans.

I think I've decided on recent reread of the Potter books that the later books don't go dark enough. Like, they are darker and more adult without going all the way. Deaths happen off screen several times. We don't get to see the aftermath of stuff as much. And emotional affects don't seem to last (like, Harry in book 5 made sense to me, but then in book 6 after losing his godfather it was like he didn't feel it at all). And also the romances all felt very childish in the way they were written.

I liked the films more before, but I've liked them less and less. There are still some great bits, and most of the adult cast is great. But just some really bad choices were made that ruins big chunks of them both in character and plot.

I think I'm that way too. I can't even watch the first Hobbit movie (which is the one I like the best) because I know it's a precursor to everything I dislike in the second two.

And it's kinda sad because the movies, for all their faults, inspired so much for me.
