What Young Whippersnappers need to see!

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2016-06-07 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Kids these days, they don't know nothing about good media!

Obviously WE know good shit from back in the day. Us older folks of a better generation!

So give me yours! Give me the stuff that a 15 year old (lets say something you'd show a younger cousin for perspective on appropriateness) probably hasn't seen from back in the day that you totally think they should see! Movies*, shows, heck, even old gifs and memes from back in the day when geocities was a place to make a website if you want! (You're the man now dog! You're the man now dog!
http://yourethemannowdog.ytmnd.com/)

Lemme have its plz!

*Might become a stream!

Clash of the Titans (the original)

I keep forgetting they made a remake.

And that remake had a sequel.

It's always weird to watch the Harryhausen effects in Clash of the Titans and then remember it came out the year AFTER The Empire Strikes Back.

+1 to the original Clash of the Titans and The Day the Earth Stood Still
+1 to Forbidden Planet

although, I must ask, what was "When Worlds Collide" - that's not ringing any bells whatsoever

Forbidden Planet is such a gorgeous movie! The special effects still look great. The monster from the id trying to break through the invisible fence is one of my favorite FX sequences ever!

YMNTD was gifshit before gifs were really a thing, and youtubepoop before youtube even existed.

I remember about a year or so ago, some folks from my generation (80s, 90s) and I showed the video of Green Jelly's (Or Green Jello, depending on when you first got into them) "Three Little Pigs" to a fifteen-year-old. She was sufficiently amused.

Legit answer

Old reality television. This stuff just isn't very well known. I've legit made jokes about it and nobody knew it.

But please don't start inviting fifteen year olds to your streams.

I would even add some early 2000s/"mainstream" reality as well. That first season of America's Next Top Model is like an encyclopedia of now-standard reality tropes.

Three Kings doesn't get mentioned much, but I thought it was a neat movie at the time, and I wonder how it looks from our point in history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyR5bk4_pHk

Twilight of the Cockroaches is a trip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3PfE2a_Al0

a few of my favorites:
-Jason and the Argonauts [the original '63 with Todd Armstrong and Nancy Kovack. Bonus of having the 2nd Doctor]
-The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad [Kerwin Matthews as Sinbad]
-Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger [Patrick Wayne as Sinbad, Jane Seymour as his love interest. And a reappearance of the 2nd Doctor]
-Journey to the Center of the Earth [the original '59 with Pat Boone. Yes, that Pat Boone, the singer]
-Jack the Giant Killer [the original '62 with Kerwin Matthews as Jack]
-Fantastic Voyage [with Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasance]
-The Golden Voyage of Sinbad [John Phillip Law as Sinbad and the 4th Doctor as our villain]

and while we're at it:
-The Thief of Bagdad ['40 with Sabu]

If roaches are fair game then Joe's Apartment in all its horrible terrible glory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOtcnMepl1E

The Mask maybe? The original with Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz. Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish... Anything by Tim Burton pre-getting shoved as producer for Batman movies that where terrible. Speaking of Batman movies, Batman and Batman Returns.

Gargoyles, Batman The Animated Series, Animaniacs, Frekazoid... what the hell happened to WB? They had gr8 shows. Beetlejuice the animation but I don't know how well it holds up these days.

15 year olds who want to know what real rebellion from bullshit was should read Hunter Thompson.
