Does anything actually prevent waking up with a dry/bad-tasting mouth?

Well, drinking enough fluids during the day will help the dryness. Also using a mouthwash specifically designed to combat dry mouth.

If you're on certain medications or have an underlying medical condition, then I don't really know.

Sorry, missed this - I do drink a lot! I've not heard of dry mouth mouth wash before, generally mouth wash makes it worse, so I'll try that.

Mouthwash for dry mouth tends to not have alcohol, which is drying. Brands may vary though -- I've only really used Biotene.

You may want to think about your diet as well - cut back on drinks that act as diuretics, such as caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, as they can dry you out. Try to stick with a balanced diet as much as possible.

Also, make sure you aren't breathing through your mouth as you sleep.

*Correction, I lean toward the Biotene with the green, not the blue. They stupidly changed the formula with the blue and now there are actually more chemicals (parabens) in it.

I definitely do breathe through my mouth.

...Not really. Brushing and mouthwash only do so much. You stop producing as much saliva when you sleep, so your mouth will get dry regardless.

If your mouth is noticeably foul and actually tastes bad when you get up (instead of just sort of mildly unpleasant) I might suggest a trip to the dentist to make sure nothing else is going on.

Already asked my dentist (she says drink more, but I drink a lot) - and mouthwash often just makes it worse, really.

Huh. Well, I'm not a dentist so this is pretty much outside my purview.

Perhaps try switching toothpaste brands to see if that helps any, but other than that I don't really have any ideas.

Have you tried dry mouth mouthwash? Biotene is made for that, being way less caustic then moth mouthwashes and supposedly actually moisturizes. My piercer had me use it when I got my lip pierced, but I've kept using it cause I find it helps in general.

No, I have not (as mouth wash in general made it worse). Might try, thank you!

Not that I've found. And some of the meds I take have dry mouth as a side effect, which makes it worse.

Only meds I take really are blood pressure pills, and they're lowest dosage.

that happens to me when I nap but not when I wake up in the morning. interesting. is that typical for you every day? :|a

Re: Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I only get it when I nap too, is there a reason for that? Is there some reason shorter sleep cycles make my mouth dry out but not long ones?

Re: Advice Thread

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-06-08 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
No idea. It's one of several reasons I don't like naps - not only does my mouth feel gross when I wake up but I feel bloated and groggy. And it wastes time.

Maybe not every day, but very common. Worse so at my bf's 'cause I think the air is dry.

That sounds very annoying. I'm sorry :(

Do you brush your tongue thoroughly? You might also have indigestion or something else bringing acids back up while you sleep?

Well, I have gastric banding, soi that's basically reflux by default.
