You know how this goes.

How do you handle a boss berating you (likely in front of all your coworkers) without crying?

I just smile and act OTT nice in a way that makes it clear I think they're dumb as fuck and am internally laughing at them.

If huge company: go to HR, file a complaint. Definitely cry in front of your coworkers so his ass gets torn anew for it.

If small company and he is the owner: nothing, for you have no recourse but to quit.

You quit.

Alternatively, you snap back. Might still get fired, but frankly if this is how he behaves, you either need to establish you won't be treated this way, or leave. It's not a healthy situation.

HR if you're working somewhere where that will work.

If not: make an exit plan. Work on breathing and keeping your voice even and saying "okay, thanks." And try hard not to internalize. It's not you.

Take deep breaths and try to figure out if this is a one time incident or something that happens regularly.

If it's a large company, go to HR. If a small company, begin looking for a new job.

As someone who cries easily, I find responding very minimally can help me keep it together.

Re: Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Stare at him/her with a focused, calm and blank expression. (This may or may not work, but I'm only going by the experience of having been deliberately broken down and humiliated by a narcissistic "parent." But it did keep me from breaking down in front of a boss with a minefield for a temper.)

It might also depend too. Are they shrieking at you, or just criticizing you in a reasonably calm tone? If they're shrieking, let them shriek, they're only letting themselves look bad. Report to HR later as boss has created witnesses anyway. If they're calmer, just listen to the words and remind yourself it's not an assessment of you as a character, it's just work stuff you need to note so you don't repeat certain mistakes in the future.

that really sucks. I hate crying in public and I hate it when people do that to me.

honestly, I hate to say this, but my advice is, freshen up that resume. How long have you worked there?

Re: Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think I may be the only one who thinks you can talk to him about it...? You say he's a good boss besides this issue, maybe at a time when you're not in trouble ask to speak with him privately. Tell him you like working for this company and realize there are improvements you need to make, but that you're just feeling aggitated and embarrassed by his corrections, instead of improved by them. Tell him while some people might feel motivated by that, you aren't one of them, and you'd really prefer he take the problems up with you alone so you can discuss solutions.

Of course there are just assholes but some people just think they're the loud, loveable coach type who's getting through to people. If he's otherwise good, he might not realize how upsetting it is.

Re: Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Take deep breaths and try to distance yourself mentally from it. Try to look at the situation objectively. Was the error yours? What can you do to fix it? What can you do to make sure it doesn't happen again? Plan that out in your head so you can reassure your boss once he stops yelling.

Don't make excuses for yourself. Admit the fault, APOLOGIZE, tell him what steps you plan to take to make sure it doesn't happen again and then do it.

Does anything actually prevent waking up with a dry/bad-tasting mouth?

Re: Advice Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-06-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, drinking enough fluids during the day will help the dryness. Also using a mouthwash specifically designed to combat dry mouth.

If you're on certain medications or have an underlying medical condition, then I don't really know.

...Not really. Brushing and mouthwash only do so much. You stop producing as much saliva when you sleep, so your mouth will get dry regardless.

If your mouth is noticeably foul and actually tastes bad when you get up (instead of just sort of mildly unpleasant) I might suggest a trip to the dentist to make sure nothing else is going on.

Not that I've found. And some of the meds I take have dry mouth as a side effect, which makes it worse.

Do you brush your tongue thoroughly? You might also have indigestion or something else bringing acids back up while you sleep?

Allergies

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-06-08 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Are there things to do for allergies that won't make me so sleepy? There is so much mold in the air right now here in Texas, and it is killing me. But my regular anti-histimine isn't cutting it. And if I take benadryl, then all I want to do is nap. But Benadryl is the only thing that seems to help the headaches.
