People always react with more disgust to cross-generational incest than to sibling incest.

Well, almost always, but Supernatural fandom is a terrifying place.

Are there a lot of people in the Supernatural fandom who ship Sam or Dean with John or Mary, though?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
For a while there, there was a lot of John/Dean, John/Sam, and John/Sam/Dean incest, and any detractors were shut down hard.

I'm glad I missed that.

I mean, YKINMKATOK, but since canonically speaking John basically brainwashed his kids, that's an extra helping of ew on top of what is already a creepy dynamic.

Hello, that's likely the appeal.

For some people, sure.

The amount of cutesy squeeing from corners of the ship fandom was just unnerving, though.

For what it's worth, the handful of John/Dean stories I read back then all represented the ship as abusive.

Might've depended on your corner of fandom. The stuff I came across was split between written as creepy and abusive, and written from a really unnerving perspective that focused hard on just how cute and young the boys were. IDK whether the fans writing it were really young themselves and just writing their kink in a way that was disturbing to older readers, or were older readers themselves, or what.

I read the ship, and I found ONE, a total of ONE fic where they actually had a healthy relationship. ('Healthy.')

...are you kidding? I was horrified to find out I was shipping sibling Pokemon in a mystery dungeon game.

No.

And I didn't say everyone in fandom is just fine with sibling incest, just that cross-generational usually gets a worse reaction, particularly from people who ship sibling incest, but also from people who are horrified by incest in general.

It's a general trend, not an absolute.

Isn't that the truth? I guess the sibling incest fans already feel kinda guilty for shipping incest, so beating up the cross-gen incest fans makes them feel better about themselves.

Some of them definitely come off that way.

Others, I think, ship for aesthetics, or kink on the taboo aspects, but can't get past the real-world CSA parallels in cross-gen incest and go too far in their attempts to distance themselves from it.

In this case, though, there is no child sexual abuse; the daughter was already in college when the father met her?

I mean, I guess it's possible that the OP is leaving out the fact that the daughter was, in fact, a genius who started college at twelve or something like that, but in general you assume that someone in college is at least eighteen.

DA

I think that's what AYRT meant when they said "go too far to distance themselves from it."

And honestly, if it had been father/son, I doubt it would have gotten as much hate. But any time you have an older man with a younger female relative, most of fandom is going to go berserk. At least in public. In private, I'm sure they're wanking themselves raw over it.

I was speaking broadly, anon. We don't know anything at all about the fandom, so we can't really discuss that specific instance with any authority.

Pacific Rim was another exception to this; there was tons of Herc/Chuck, often unlabeled.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
oh god I had forgotten about that.
