I think it's not a secret cause so many people feel as you. i think it was sort of deliberate. Jadzia was such a stunning woman, both in looks and character, a replacement was a problem by default. So, they chose someone very different. I dunno, Ezri sort of grew on me.

I think the problem was that there was just no way in the world that they were going to be able to properly flesh out a new character in just one season. I don't know if there were plans for more seasons or if 7 was always going to be the magic number, but I honestly think bringing on a brand new, quite literal replacement for a beloved character with so little lead-in was a really big mistake.
