Just on the slim chance you aren't a troll, here are some recs:
Ghost Hunt (mystery/horror/little hints of romance), Nodame Cantibile (humor/romance/music, Rurouni Kenshin (historical action w/ side of romance), Yu Yu Hakusho (supernatural action/humor). Try some older stuff, some slice of life or Shojo/Josei.

With respect I'm not sure Shonen tournament stuff is really going to cross the line of not having dumb plots

You're probably right, it's been about 10 years since I've watched it. I was trying to think of interesting action anime - Samurai Champloo probably would have been a better suggestion.
