I'm grateful for anime, know why?

Unlike furry fiction, I've never seen an anime where one of the characters eats people by stuffing them up her ass.

Miyazaki said anime was a mistake. Of course he meant it in the context that pandering to otaku is ruining the industry, but sadly, they're willing to spend the outrageous prices for the DVDs/Blu-rays (which come 2 episodes per disc) and merchandise.

Also a good deal of anime fans are teenagers, and we know they don't have taste.

I know how you feel. I like anime as a thing, still, and it's easy for me to find and allows me to listen to Japanese, but it's been a while since I've really been impressed by anything. Then again, anime is popular media, and there's been a huge inflation of the number of series coming out in recent years, and more stuff that just panders to the audience.
Your gripes are in many ways my gripes - I can't stand fanservice, and a lot of the tropes grate. Part of it is that a lot of anime really is juvenile.
If you are interested in recs, A few years ago the Akatsuki no Yona anime came out, and it was great. The plot is quite decent, and has some surprising twists, the characters are all adorable, and no trashy fanservice.
Ore Monogatari!! is a really cute romance series that actually treats the characters' relationship in a surprisingly mature way. Also there, no cheap fanservice - and the series actually deals with sexuality. Not creepy perving, but the way the characters' deal with actual sexual desire as teenagers. It was pretty well done.

The current season has Boku no Hero Academia, which is a standard shounen done well. It has good style and character development, though I admit it's weak on the female characters front.

Have you seen Baccanno, Princess Jellyfish, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket or the Wallflower? I don't think they had stupid plots or overly sexualizing underage girls

But I'm not sure any of them could be considered smart or mature.

There's anime that's considered smart or mature by actual adults?

Sometimes I think anime is like the Republican Party. Pandering to their most consistent supporters drives off everyone else, so they pander even harder to get even more support from their base.

Just on the slim chance you aren't a troll, here are some recs:
Ghost Hunt (mystery/horror/little hints of romance), Nodame Cantibile (humor/romance/music, Rurouni Kenshin (historical action w/ side of romance), Yu Yu Hakusho (supernatural action/humor). Try some older stuff, some slice of life or Shojo/Josei.

I think when you've been watching anime for a really long time, being able to tell what kind of shows will have that and which won't becomes easier, because I used to drop a lot more shows on account of finding them too excessive. Now in the handful of new shows I usually watch each season, I only run into mild problems with one or two if any.

I wish I could give you advice on how to spot them, but I rely on gut instinct about the art style, promotional pics and summary more than anything. Maybe find some feminist anime blogs? One thing I can say for sure is: Avoid things based on light novels. Oh and anything by KyoAni.

Or maybe you just don't like anime anymore. That's fine too, means you won't have to worry about being judged.

i know what you mean. i feel like i grew out of anime plots awhile ago, and getting into anything for the sexy pandering isn't going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you (or your tastes) are just growing up, OP. I used to be really into anime and loved nearly every anime I saw, but I've gotten a lot pickier and now I just watch the stuff that interests me. I read a lot of manga and if there's an anime adaptation, I'll usually watch it, but it irritates me to no end when a manga gets only one or two anime seasons. I really want more seasons of Skip Beat and Kamisama Kiss.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
meh, it's one thing to criticize popular anime tropes, but acting like every anime features sexualized young girls or even women in general is just objectively wrong. I feel like most "I HATE ANIME BECAUSE ____" rants is trying to generalize a medium that shouldn't be generalized.

OP

*props chin on hands* So, OP, how many World Masterpiece Theater series have you watched?

Rich plots, often empowered female characters that are never sexualized.. basically what you're saying doesn't exist.

I understand how you might be burned out, but as someone who claims to have been once interested in anime, I would think you would know better than to paint every single anime ever with the same brush.

May I suggest Mushishi. It's my favorite, about a wandering doctor of the supernatural. It's very calm, subdued even; I find it very refreshingly mature. Good music, beautifully painted backgrounds, and interesting concepts and creatures. Each episode is a standalone story.

I watch all new TV anime with low expectations and an awareness that I'm probably not about to experience an intelligent narrative. Half the pleasure of the """medium""" is wankery of cute or cool-looking characters doing cute or cool-looking things, the pandering aspect is baked into the marketing and marketing is baked into the shows (and I can barely even criticise "look at all these sexy girls!" shit when I follow so much "look at all these sexy guys!" shit). Sure, you sometimes get impressive animation/direction on top of that. Some shows or adaptations are genuinely clever, funny or thoughtful, but not much beyond what you can find in other formats (and when they do pop up coughrakugocough they may go under the popularity radar). For the most part, even as I consume a bunch of shows every season, it's a self-aware pleasure and I'm not in illusions about the current standards of writing in this particular industry.

So I'm always baffled when I come across people who clearly are. Seriously, it fucks with my head a bit when I'm lurking message boards and somebody writes a big-ass paragraph of 'analysis' on the genius of some current-season anime, which always ultimately boils down to 'this is crude symbolism' or 'wow, this represents something! so deep' shit like the user has never watched/read anything that isn't TV anime, and thus has only just discovered the basics of what storytelling/characterisation can do. Which is not to shit on all analysis of anime, but on the over-credulousness of certain anime fans who think anime is the be-all of literary technique...every season's critically-praised "amazing dark mature intelligent epic!" show is almost guaranteed to turn out as either flimsy fluff or a total clusterfuck.

I also think anime fandom is horrible at maintaining critical distance. This is true of a lot of fandom, but I think anime's focus on appealing characters exacerbates the problem. Maybe I'm just hanging around the wrong circles, but it fucks me up so much when I see people having epic personal debates about which characters are the best people and had the most justified emotional outburst, as if they're real humans in an internally consistent universe and it matters, with little regard for the fact they're constructions and might be faultily made...But that's how the publishers make their merchandise bux, I guess?
I'm more done with anime viewers than with anime. In general I've started learning never to take narratives for granted or unquestioned, and now I wish everyone else watching all these crap series with me would at least catch up.

As other replies have said, there is a lot of great older stuff (and completely mad older stuff that I love anyway - I'm partial to Patalliro) and some new gems underneath all the banality. But I don't blame you for stepping off the anime wagon, OP.

I find the idea that Western media doesn't sexualize teenagers to be patently hilarious. Do you have any idea how many teenagers in Western media are played by adult actors specifically so that they can be written in sexual situations without it being illegal?

Yeah, most current anime is for an otaku audience, but it's not that hard to find better stuff?

What I do is: avoid ecchi and moe no matter what, watch shounen and shoujo (specially magic shoujo) only if people whose taste I trust recommend it because those demographics are the ones more full of generic and actually-for-otas stuff and always check josei and non-edgy seinen.

And I think I'll add give it a chance to animes with a full adult cast, seeing as some of recent animes I loved (Shirobako, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and Joker Game) are focused on adult characters.

70s anime/manga, so no weird sexualization of girls. Action, boxing, drama, tragedy, and fart jokes. It's the anime so good that it shaped a nation's culture for years to come. Anybody from any walk of life can find something that touches their soul in it, and what it has to say about people has not aged at all. The manga or anime are both pretty good.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-10 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
