Have you seen Baccanno, Princess Jellyfish, Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket or the Wallflower? I don't think they had stupid plots or overly sexualizing underage girls

But I'm not sure any of them could be considered smart or mature.

There's anime that's considered smart or mature by actual adults?

Rakugo.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
When I Googled that, the title Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū came up. Is that the right one? It certainly sounds different, that's for sure.

Yes.

Thanks! They have it on Crunchyroll, I'm going to check it out.

yeah, there was no sexualization of underage girls, but the plot drama turns out to be contrived and misogynist imo. it's still worth it for the Rakugo performances though.

I don't know, what's the barometer for smart and mature? I'd consider a bunch of those to be pretty smart anime.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmmm, good question. I don't know, maybe it's just me. "Smart" isn't generally a word I use to describe entertainment that I like. I'm more likely to use the word "clever," which doesn't have precisely the same meaning.

As for "mature," it's hard for me to associate "mature" with a show about teenagers, no matter how good it is.

So in that sense Baccano would be an exception. I haven't seen too many anime series about adults.

What about Princess Jellyfish? They're all college age, at least.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
But they were pretty sheltered/naive, which comes across as child-like.

Fair enough.

Aren't Fruits Basket and Ouran harem shows?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
reverse harem which is infinitely better

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't think it makes that much of a difference tbh

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It really does. Those two shows at least are objectively nothing like regular harem anime, and not just because of the gender reverse.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a substantial difference in their plots?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Reverse harem.

Fruits Basket isn't a harem - I'm pretty sure there are only two potential romantic interests. Ouran is, but I feel like it's only nominally.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Fruits Basket, kinda. It's mostly about everyone loving the main character because she's so awesome and kind and perfect, but not necessarily in a romantic way. There are only three guys who are in love with her, and one was just confused, he actually thinks of her as a mother.

Ouran, the anime, is a parody of harem shows but it's not one. The manga on the other hand went full harem.

Ouran is technically a reverse harem show, in that it's an affectionate parody of all the standard tropes of the genre, so it has a very different feel than a standard harem show.

And also it's hilarious.

Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost In The Shell, Wolf's Rain, Tokyo Godfathers (or anything Satoshi Kon has ever done, RIP) and Akira comes to mind, in regards to anime being smart and mature for adults. In Cowboy Bebop's case, there are moments where it gets silly at times, but when it gets serious, it really gets deep.

Planetes is one of the best-constructed anime I've seen in terms of plot, theme, and character development. I would also nominate Yuasa's work, Kaiba is great sci-fi (Ping Pong's also supposed to be really good, but I haven't seen past the first episode.)
