Yeah, my sister is a huge fan and can't comprehend how they are going to deal with that character considering how important their races are
blitzwing: the batman symbol in the rainbow gay pride colors ([batman--gay pride])

Parts of his appearance might be important, but his skin color isn't one of them. Him being older and weathered looking is important. His eye color is mentioned a lot, but it's not plot-important.

"His relationship with a major character" - Detta? She's not a major character. Susannah is. The only thing it affects is Detta won't be calling Roland a honky. They might erase the race-specific aspects of the interactions entirely--which still changes only minor details, not the thematic/plot elements.

I've seen far more analysis like mine than I've seen people going "LOL white tears".

but i mean dont...detta and Susannah fuse together?

Wait, this is the "major character" and the "important plot point" everyone keeps bawling about? She calls him a honky sometimes? JFC.

I don't know this canon but I have a similar feeling about Momoa as Aquaman. He looks cool and I like Momoa but being blonde is a huge plot-point for Aquaman. Not that he couldn't be a blonde POC but that doesn't look like where they're going.

I don't know much about Aquaman. How is being blond a plot point for him? Serious question. I've just never heard anything about his hair.

I know hardly anything about Aquaman--how is his hair color important? I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons anyone's hair would be that important unless they're Rapunzel, Samson, or Medusa.

Is there some reason his whiteness being significant in the books can't be changed to blackness being significant? Does this other character not like white people? That could easily be changed to the character not liking black people, and would be more realistic besides.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but then what would people complain about?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, cause Odetta will be basically the same if she's a white woman with issues about trusting black men.

>character not liking black people, and would be more realistic besides

So we should always be stuck with the same tired old narratives and never escape the victim complex amirite. God, you guys are impossible.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the character is a black female Civil Rights activist, it will be a bit hard. But we can just take the easy way out and just get rid of that black female character. Replace her with a white lady.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
More realistic how?

Book Spoiler

There have been multiple variations of the characters and stories across time and multiverses.

I've only read the first book, I'm just not crazy about Elba's acting.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i actually hadn't thought of that OP! that's the only reason why him being white is a part to consider.
BUT i guess you could just have Odetta/Detta/Susannah more willing to talk to him and be extra distrustful to Eddie? Like just change how she initially reacts to him and I think it would be alright.

HONESTLY a lot of how Odetta/Detta/Susannah is written in the books makes me feel, SUPER WEIRD and uncomfortable, i'm hoping they'll change her a little bit too

I'm super excited about Idris Elba's casting and I think he'll be great, but at the same time I'm also like ... Timothy Olyphant exists. Why did they not cast him?

I'm sure there are many titles where a characters is whitewashed, it messes up a plot point, but they find some way to get around it.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the exact same thing. Idris Elba will be great but he's not the right actor for the part.

Personally I think Clint Eastwood would have been right for it.

I'd heard from several places that the movie was going to be intentionally a different iteration of the cycle from the one we got in the book so there could be surprises, and because King has always wanted to rewrite the first few anyway.
