Lots of female celebrities date lots of guys without getting the kind of mockery Swift does. But I'm betting that the fact that she writes songs about her failed relationships is a significant part of why people feel like her love life is fair game for discussion.

It's one thing to discuss it, it's another thing to have the sheer amount of disgust I see (You know who else sings about failed relationships and doesn't get this level of hate for it? Adele, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Miranda Lambert, Sam Smith, literally anyone who has had a top 40s hit in the past decade...). And it's a COMPLETELY different ballgame to take secret photos.

Then again, they don't sing it like the guy deserves every bad thing they get for dumping them like Taylor does.

Picture to Burn -- She's going to tell his friends he's gay, date all his friends, burn photographic evidence of his existence.

Better Than Revenge -- Pretty much slut-shaming the new girlfriend of her ex while bitching about her ex.

Dear John -- She actually wrote it TO break up with the guy instead of even doing the decent thing and talking to him.

We are Never Ever Getting Back Together -- Literally her just being a BITCH about the guy.

So yeah, she's kind of had a history of being a bitch--and making sure to identify things about the guy in a song. Sure, Adele's stuff may be full of pointless pining, Katy Perry may do the bitchy thing on a less PERSONAL level, etc...but yeah. She does it PERSONALLY and on a BITCH level.

Mind you I'm not keen on a lot of Adele's stuff either, but yeah.

Better than Revenge I have no excuse for and yes, it pisses me off too.

Dear John: Source, because I have literally never heard that and in fact heard that he broke up with her.

Never Ever is your typical pop break up song and is not any more bitchy than any other pop break up song.

I don't think she does too much identifying stuff these days unless it's positive or wistful.

I Wish You Would, Wildest Dreams, Tim McGraw, Breathe (which can also be interpreted as 'I did this'), The Other Side Of The Door has her openly admit to being irrational, The Way I Loved You refers to fighting but in a wistful manner, If This Was A Movie assigns blame to both parties, I Want You Back is VERY self hating, Last Kiss is wistful, as are I Almost Do, Red, and Sad Beautiful Tragic, and Style has an on-off relationship. Add in most of her 'positive' romantic songs being produced/released AFTER the break up. Don't test me on T-Swift knowledge, you will lose.

This is an excellent rebuttal.

Thank you! Taylor Swift is basically 90% of my playlist. She's the only artist I've ever consistently liked from start to finish, and I totally get why people don't like her as an artist, and even why people don't like her as a person! But I won't stand for blatantly untrue statements, if you're going to hate something for any other reason than 'I just do' (Because we all have that thing we hate for no reason) you should at least have your facts straight.

I don't know a whole lot about her, myself, but I do like a few of her songs, and I've heard about her doing really nice things for fans. And she seems pretty business savvy with her career, too, which I respect-some artists aren't lucky enough to have that kind of control over their careers. She's okay with me :).

And I totally agree about getting one's facts straight, too.

Yeah, I think there are a lot of legitimate criticisms about some of her older songs and mishaps, but I think she's really matured and mellowed a lot, and she goes out of her way to be sweet to her fans.

Well, like you so aptly noted, she was in her teens when she first started out. Lots of teenagers say and do stupid stuff, but most of us are fortunate enough to not have our mistakes put out into the public sphere like hers were. I loved Britney Spears when I was a teenager (and still like some of her songs), so I'm very forgiving and understanding of teenage celebrities' struggle to transition from teen stardom to adulthood. It's a really messy transition sometimes.

But yeah, so long as she's learning from her mistakes and maturing and all that good stuff, then it's okay to live and let live with some of her early missteps.

Yep, if I'd gotten famous at 16 I would be in hiding right now. Hell, I'm 23 and I still do some awfully stupid things. It's a good thing no one follows me with a camera.

I agree, and I think the anons who've been complaining about her being bitchy just haven't seen the way she's been responding to things as she gets older. Which honestly makes sense, because if I didn't like Taylor Swift I certainly wouldn't be listening to her fourth and fifth albums just to see if she matured.

I am forever thankful that my teen years happened well before Facebook/Tumblr/Twitter even existed. So, SO thankful. And I'm definitely glad to not be a celebrity, either.

"Bitchy" is a word that gets thrown around so much nowadays that it tends to lose some of its meaning, too, I feel. Someone could call me "bitchy" simply because I got up on the wrong side of the bed one day and had a grouchy moment, y'know :p? I imagine that's probably the case with Taylor, too. I figure there's probably days when she really doesn't want to do an interview, or might just want to hole up in her home and ignore the world for a day, or she's tired 'cause she's been on tour for god knows how long, or whatever, and she just needs to vent it all out in her songs as a result. Looking at it in that context, I feel that makes her less a bitch and more someone who just has a bad day like any other human being. At least she's channeling that frustration and anger in a healthy way through her music, unlike the way some other celebrities vent their personal issues, so if her metho works for her, then great.

While I respect anyone's right to be a celeb junkie, I don't think it's necessarily something to be proud of.

I don't really feel like I was expressing a whole lot of pride there.

A) having a strong knowledge of a musician's body of work is not "being a celeb junkie."

B) it is my strong opinion that caring in a positive manner about something and having knowledge about that thing is almost always a good thing. Maybe not world-altering or life-saving, but still usually a mark in life's general plus column.

The number of times you use the word "bitch" in your comment gives me the solid impression that you're not actually worth replying to, but what the hell, I'm bored.

The actual line is, "Go ahead and tell your friends I'm crazy, I'll tell mine your gay." First of all, Taylor cut that line from subsequent iterations of the track so as not to be offensive to LGB individuals. Secondly, we're talking about a guy who goes around spreading "crazy ex" rumors. It's emotional, and immature on both sides. But when two sixteen-year-olds break up, that's pretty standard. The "date all your friends" line is obviously tongue in cheek, but even if it weren't, so what? If Taylor wants to date all her ex's friends and they want to date her, that's completely her prerogative. And who the hell takes issue with someone burning their ex's pictures after a messy breakup? I've never done it myself, but if it's a comfort, I say more power to them.

This is not accurate information. They had broken up. Then she wrote this song, in which she basically wrote down all the things she wanted to say, post breakup, as final parting words, and put them in a song. Presumably John Mayer didn't even hear the song until the better part of a year after they broke up, since they broke up in February 2010 and Speak Now didn't come out until October 2010.

Yeah, this song is not very nice. This was Taylor's "mean girl" song for sure. But seriously, I didn't become a feminist until I was twenty-one; I don't even want to think about what sort of slut-shamey things I might have said in high school, simply because I didn't realize how messed up and backwards they were. And I say that as someone who was almost never consciously mean to other kids. If Taylor Swift comes out with another song that echoes those sentiments now, I'll be a much harsher critic, but until then...meh, people grown and change and learn - teenagers especially.

The only songs that come to mind where she's actively hinted at the identity of who they're about are Dear John, Should've Said No, and Style. Of the two, Style is a fairly flattering depiction of both the person and the relationship, and given the shit John Mayer has said about his exes in the press, frankly, he probably deserved to have that song floating around out there. In the case of Should've Said No, the dude cheated, and it's a song about a guy cheating. Nothing wrong with that.

In the other cases where we feel like we know who a song's about, it's a case of Paps and Press putting Taylor Swift's life under a magnifying glass and thus giving the thirsty-for-gossip public every opportunity to make connections they would never be able to make if Taylor were afforded the modicum of privacy that any person rightfully deserves.

I love you. I should have gone into detail on the songs, but I was busy listing random T-Swift songs and now I've missed my chance. These are all really good points.

It's really nice to hear from another person who likes Taylor Swift and her music but isn't a fanatical teenager who worships her unconditionally. In offline life I know a few people who like her/her music, but on the internet the prevailing narrative seems to be that she's a phony, bitchy, narcissistic, needy, calculating sociopath...or something?

It's the weirdest thing. It's like that blue and black versus white and gold dress situation, except with a person instead of a dress.

Yeah, there's a lot of intense judgement going around about Taylor considering we don't actually know a whole lot about her personal life. Haters gonna hate.

Completely random, but I kinda like "We are Never Ever Getting Back Together". I don't care who it's about, it's just kind of a fun song in terms of how it's crafted (I think it could fit nicely alongside Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" for a "kiss off" playlist). And the video was weird and funny as well :D.

I like it too. Also, I can personally attest to it being a fun song to do for karaoke. :D
