Re: Book characters who you pictured very differently from the movie portrayal

Yeah, I'm not that familiar with Tolkien canon, so I was surprised to find out that in the books Frodo was around the same age Bilbo was when he left on his adventure. Apparently Jackson fiddled with the timing, what happened when, so Frodo's younger? I just don't know what to picture now.

Yup, Frodo is 33 at the beginning of Fellowship but 50 when he starts out on the journey. Which isn't the same as human 50, but he isn't as young as Elijah looks. Jackson cut out the wait time between Bilbo's party and Gandalf's return and then Frodo setting out. In the book there are years between the party and Gandalf's return and then a few months between the return and when Frodo sets out (and in the book Merry and Pippin are aware of the journey and don't just accidentally stumble on Frodo and Sam).

I still think Elijah looks young even for a Hobbit 33, though.

Isn't a Hobbit 33 a coming-of-age thing? Like 18 or 21 in our world? That's how I remember/understood it.

So how about 50-ish in Hobbit years then? I think Martin Freeman is an excellent Bilbo, one of the best (few good?) things about those movies, but then I really like him in general. Is he too old for the part? I think in the books he mentions he was sort of middle aged for a Hobbit, but in Tolkien's time middle age was probably a few years younger than now. So, like 40-ish? That would fit with MF.

Yes, about 30s or 40s, somewhere in there. Freeman was perfect to me. And Elijah did a good job of acting, I think, he just looks too young.
