About oreo

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is extremely stupid What's the deals with oreos? Why are they so popular?

Everytime they come up people start to act like it's the best thing since sliced bread.
I mean I tried them and they are okay, but not something to write home about...

Relentless fucking advertising during Saturday morning cartoons in the 80s and 90s. That is why they are so popular.

And there's likely something you consider the bee's knees that other people are not impressed with.

Different strokes for different folks.

People like cookies. I don't really like chocolate chip cookies but I get why everyone loves them so much. Different strokes.

As an Australian, they were never a big thing for me. Arnotts Delta Cream is basically the same thing as an Oreo - lighter coloured biscuits, but still chocolate with a vanilla cream middle - and I was never very big on those either.

For reference, two Delta Creams:

idk nonny, idk

they seemed to be the go-to cookie for my friends when I was a kid (mid-late 90s). I didn't get the popularity back then when I was a kid with a sweet tooth and I still don't get it now. The cookie part tastes okay I guess, but the filling tastes like chemical-tainted powdered sugar.

They have Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Oreos that are downright addicting. Other than that, just plain Oreos aren't anything special to me.

Beats me. I don't like the filling, and it tends to gum up the cookie bits in my teeth. I hate that. There are lots of better tasting cookies on the market, but Oreos have been around for ages, so... /shrug

It's hard to explain

I occasionally like them dunked in milk, but generally I think they're a really good ingredient in other things (ground up for a pie crust, chunks in ice cream or brownies or whatever, stuffed in a chocolate chip cookie, one whole one as the bottom of a mini cheesecake, etc.). Like marshmallows, which I like just fine, but don't often eat plain, in the right combination with other ingredients, they can take a recipe up a notch.

I preferred Hydrox, but they stopped making those.

In all seriousness, I actually like the Keebler "Simply Made" knock-off Oreos better than actual Oreos

Some Oreo trivia for you:

My dad used to work for a chocolate factory owned by Nabisco. One of the things that this factory did was process cocoa specifically for Oreo cookies. You may not know this, but the cookie recipe requires slightly burnt cocoa. Imagine the smell of burning cocoa over a 3 to 4 km radius around the chocolate factory. Not to mention that it invariably got into all of the workers' clothing.

I personally prefer Newman O's TBH...
