Trans Men

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like media & commentary focuses way more on trans women than on trans men.

Am I crazy and wrong here? Why is this the case? And can anyone think of any decent movies or TV shows that includes representation of trans men?

Re: Trans Men

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Boys Don't Cry.

But yeah, WAY more trans women than trans men.

Boys Don't Cry and L Word are the only ones I could remember (and I'm not that sure about L word).

Most likely it's just because trans women provide better eye candy than trans men (unless you want to write a serious social commentary, and most movies/TV shows don't).

Degrassi had a trans male character, right? Never seen that show but yeah.

Trans guys do seem to have less media made about them.

Re: Trans Men

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
My personal thought on why trans men have more representation: mainstream society is more likely to view trans boys as tomboys or butch women - its seen as "a phase" and can be written off easier.

Trans women on the other hand, can't be written off so easily, so they are are seen as more "shocking" and "other" - so therefor more ripe for film fodder.

And I think all of that is born from unfortunate gender roles and sucks for both trans men and women. You have no idea how many people I've seen talking about Boys Don't Cry refer to the main character consistently as "she" or "a woman presenting as a man" - and on the flip side trans women are way more likely to be objectified and used for bigoted shock humor.

That is just my two cents though.

There are more trans women than trans men by, what, three to one?

the male gaze andor ego feels attracted to and thrown off by trans women

plus it's a truth in television that they're often involved in sex work, and that's a popular exploitive topic as well

Hi again, trans anon! I can't give TV or movies (SO not my medium) but if you want comics, I can give you TONS. (Not necessarily ones I LIKE, but hey, your taste might differ from me.)

PROSE:
Ellen Wittlinger's 'Parrotfish.'
Jennie Woods's 'A Boy Like Me.'

PHOTOGRAPHY:
Rebbeca Swan's 'Assume Nothing.'

COMICS:
Jennie Woods's 'Flutter.' (Flutter is more gender-bendy/nonbinary shapeshifting stuff.)
Shimura Takako's 'Wandering Son.' (Trans girls and boys.)
Tab Kimpton's 'Khaos Komix.' (Specifically Tom's Story.)
Sam Orchard's Rooster Tails.

Comics anthologies with trans guy content:
'Queerotica'
'No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics.' (Available through the Humble Bundle link at the bottom of this post.)
'Smut Peddler' (Also available at the Hundle Bundle link)
'Food Porn'

Also, this is more LGBT general rather than trans guy, but I figure this is a good place to mention humble bundle's really good deal on a bunch of queer and trans books!

I can deliver more if you like.

I think I might be emotionally abusing my partner. I don't know whether to get help, or if I should walk away entirely. I want what's best for them, but I'm immensley fucked up and don't trust myself to do it right and not hurt them more.

Therapy. Go talk to a therapist. And if you can't, walk away.

Does anyone else ever get that thing

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Where you say something and it kills the conversation instantly? Or you talk to people and you just cannot connect at all, they just clearly want you gone?

Re: Does anyone else ever get that thing

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way a lot. It's hard for me to tell how much of that is real, and how much of it is my perception as a result of my depression and anxiety issues. I think most of it is probably the latter.

I can get past moments like that. What bothers me is when there's a lull in the conversation for a moment and people immediately rush to comment on how awkward it is. People say this before enough time has passed for me to even call it an awkward moment.

Veteran F!Sers (especially anons)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you ever read F!S posts from way back, and if you do, can you recognize your own old anon comments? Even if they're not that specific to you, are you ever just able to tell? Because it happens to me a lot, and it kind of freaks me out.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know this is extremely stupid What's the deals with oreos? Why are they so popular?

Everytime they come up people start to act like it's the best thing since sliced bread.
I mean I tried them and they are okay, but not something to write home about...
