In the circular firing squad that is internet social justice, no one gets left out. Everyone will get their turn at being witch-hunted and burned on the pillar of problematicity by the flames of righteousness. No one is free of sin.

I'm think that a miniseries about fandom cults that bleed over into real life would be...gripping.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
If only the episodes with that topic that got made weren't so abysmally terribad.

How... how is it rape apology if the author says/shows "THIS IS A BAD THING AND IS BAD"?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Because people are fucking dumb, easily offended, and obsessed with making someone else's victimization all about them.

The argument is probably that they're contributing to normalizing it by adding to the number of fics depicting it. Or maybe the characters seem too sympathetic even if the author states that it's wrong so they think there's some unconscious bias or unintended implications.

Excuse me, I'm in one of my moods where I want to dissect every argument to try to figure out where they came from. It's like a puzzle. :D

I've always wondered about the 'contributing to normalizing it' argument. It seems very flawed to me. Especially for things like rape or abuse (male or female) where for a very long time it was something that was not discussed like if people ignored it hard enough it would cease to exist.

I kind of feel like if it's addressed probably and not glorified, bringing problematic things into the spotlight doesn't seem like a terrible thing.

And it's okay, I don't mind dissection! Er... of arguments. Please do not dissect your fellow commenters. You'll ruin the furniture.

Well there's the old argument about war movies that there's no such thing as an anti-war film because in making it dramatic and entertaining enough for people to want to watch it you're glorifying it. I could see that argument repurposed for rape.

But I agree with you that it's better to make people face the reality that these things happen than to not address them at all.

When rape of women isn't overdone in comparison to other brutal realities, I'll believe that it has anything to do with constructive conversation. I agree with the general point that showing something doesn't condone it, but rape I'm convinced is in some weirdly cavalier category for a lot of writers where it's hardly something they would condone but definitely have never contemplated the reality of.

That would squick the shit out of me even if the bad guy did it, but come on.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
How is it rape?

I mean, if it was one of the participants pinholing the condom then I can see it; their partner had consented to protected sex and it was unprotected instead. But if both partners had the good-faith belief that the condom was intact, how could one of them rape the other one?
dancingmouse: (Default)

[personal profile] dancingmouse 2016-06-25 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the characters did it on purpose.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the partners is under the belief that it's safe sex, when it's not: aside from the possibility of unplanned pregnancy (if that's possible with the partners involved and/or there isn't a backup method in place) there's also the increased possibility of STI transmission. So, they're having sex under false pretenses, making it rape by fraud.

TL;DR if anyone involved is deceiving the other(s) in any way, valid consent can't be given because you don't know what you're agreeing to. In this case, unprotected, or less protected, sex. Hence, rape.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-29 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's an absurd concept that waters down the concept of rape in general.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-25 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay now I'm worried, because I used the magical version of same in a fic recently...
