Tabletop RPG

So my friends and I got into Tabletop RPGs recently, but I really dislike our gaming system. One of my friends bought it a couple of years back on a convention and it is a pretty small (German) system and we basically just picked it, bc we wanted to try RPGs and had this one lying around.

So, anyone around here play tabletop rpgs? What systems do you use?

I play Dungeons and Dragons mostly, which is a D20 system, it's combat is fairly ironed out and you can be as light or as heavy with the storytelling as you like. You could also house-rule some stuff(I do) to help with the gameplay because it doesn't all work seamlessly.

I've also played World of Darkness, which is much more based around the storytelling. There are dice rolls, lots of *D10's used to make skill checks, combat checks, and I think it works fine but I never quite clicked with it. But it is much more about the roleplaying imo and you can do a lot with it in that regard.

It depends on what you're looking for, mostly - what kind of experience you want and what kind of game you want to play.

I definitely wouldn't recommend 3rd edition D&D (or Pathfinder), though, and other editions really only if you want to play really specific kinds of games. D&D gets way over-emphasized IMO - not that it's necessarily a bad game, but people treat it as way more generalized and generic of a game than it really is or should be. Of course ultimately you can have fun in any system.

Mutants and Masterminds (d20 version) is specifically meant for superhero games, but easily adapted to other genres (I have experience with medieval fantasy (a game that started as D&D 3.5) and cyberpunk), due to the syncretic nature of the superhero genre, and I've quite enjoyed playing in it. (Although a few powers will require a bit of discussion between the player and GM about just how they work.)

The d20 system in general is pretty solid - M&M, D&D 3.X/Pathfinder, and d20 Modern/Future all play well...I never got to play Call of Cthulhu d20, but elements from it adapted cleanly into a D&D 3.5 campaign I ran.

D&D 4e is pretty good, if you want to keep the mechanics contained to where they're completely necessary (mostly combat).

I've used D&D and Pathfinder, World of Darkness, FATE, and the Cortex system.

Of the lot, I've found the Cortex system and the FATE system to be the most newbie-friendly, since they're fairly straightforward. House rules can salvage most any system, though, since your GM can decide to pare off a lot of extraneous rolling and number-crunching.
