I have read this exact thing before. Did someone make a secret out of a comment?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP

Um, I'm pretty sure made a comment about this exact thing in a discussion thread about CDs, maybe a month or so ago? How odd.

I know that someone once made a secret out of a comment I made. (There was a picture of Jensen Ackles involved, though, so I wasn't complaining.)

let's be old farts together, op.

I hadn't gotten a CD for about 12 years and just last year two of my favorite 90's artists resurfaced with brand new releases and oh my god I fucking hate the cardboard. who thought this was a good idea?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I still buy CDs! And I agree with this rant.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I agree as well.

I don't think i've seen this, but then again the lst CD I bought was like two years ago.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
yup, i still buy cds

and cardboard things are often not quite proper jewel case size so you have to force them to sit in a cd rack, or stick them on some weird diagonal which looks daft

I don't buy CD's that often anymore but I really don't like the cardboard packaging I've gotten with some of them, I always feel like I'm going to scratch the CD when I pull it out.

Well, see, the fact that less people are buying CD's IS the problem - they cut production costs this way, because less copies are being sold.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
CDs make you an old person now? My child, let me tell you about something called LPs.

I still buy CDs. I'm an old fart who likes to have physical possession of the media I buy. With digital content, I don't trust that the content holders won't revoke it - my sis has had this problem with some items she bought through Apple. I buy the CD, rip it, and that was I have the best of both worlds, old and newish.

I still buy CDs! Or at least I do when I can, they are becoming harder and harder to find now.

My problem with the new packaging is that I have one of those CD case holders that I use to hold my collection of CDs, but it's designed for those old plastic cases and the cardboard packaging doesn't fit in it right. I know that's kind of a silly reason not to like the new designs of the packaging, but that's been what's bothering me about it.

I still buy CDs. I'm a big fan of physical media. I love new CD smell and reading the booklet as I'm listening to the songs. I also hate cardboard sleeves with a passion. They're flimsy and don't fit properly in my CD rack.

I still buy CDs, especially Target exclusives and every expanded/complete soundtrack that La-La-Land Records churns out all the time. I also go to used CD stores to buy out of print CDs that I don't have in my collection.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I still buy CD's every once in a while. Pretty much only for stuff that I can't get here in the USA, so it's better for me to import a CD and burn it to my iTunes. The last one I bought had cardboard, but it also had jewel case parts where the CD's sit? So it wasn't a problem for me.

I still buy CDs! Mostly because I end up meeting the artists and getting the CD signed, but even still, most of the ones I've bought have been jeweled cases, thankfully.

But I agree. The album art isn't nearly as memorable as it used to be.

I still buy CDs too, because I prefer having the physical media whenever possible as opposed to purely digital files that could easily be lost if a hard drive fails (and this has happened to me once). I grew up in the era before digital media, and my late dad collected a ton of music in different formats (a lot of which I chose to hang on to too), so it's kind of a habit of mine. I'm like this with DVDs/Blu-rays too, even with things that are easily available on Netflix and the like.

But while the majority of what I've bought in the past few years or so have been in proper jewel cases, I'm not all that fond of the cardboard sleeves either. Sure, they take up a little less space on my shelves, but they're far more likely to get damaged than the ones in the jewel cases. Why mess with a good thing?

hell, I miss record cover art. you could get in a lot more detail, plus the zipper on Sticky Fingers by the Rolling Stones or the twirly changing pictures on Led Zeppelin III.
(and I do still buy CDs because I can't afford an ipod.

It's sad, I agree. I loved it when I was a kid and I'd buy a record and there would be all these *pictures* and lyrics and all kinds of things, all huge, on the sleeve and inside and everywhere. Awesome.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
So..., wait. You're saying you miss broken off plastic lids, the little star thin in the middle going to smithereens and CDs wedged on to that star thing so hard you nearly break them in two when you try to get them off?

The booklet holder breaking off, ruining booklets while trying to get them back in there and generally a very breakable CD case?

Ok.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-08 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't buy CDs often anymore but I have a few older ones with cardboard covers and over time they got all twisted due to humid weather and now they don't even fit in a CD holder anymore.

These cases must be more prevalent in America because jewel cases are still the dominant form of CD case in Australian music stores.

Though I admit, such music stores are less common now, with CDs being more commonly found in the entertainment section of department stores, or places like JB Hi-Fi, and electronics store chain which maintains a media department that rivals Sanity. Hell, even Sanity now has a large amount of it's shelf space dedicated to DVDs and Blu-Rays with probably only a third in CDs.

The last CD I bought was Apocalyptica's Shadowmaker, which I found while looking into laybuying The Hobbit: BoFA and grabbed because I'm an Apo fan of old. It's a jewel case.

I still buy CDs too.
Fortunately, they're usually still selling them in the jewel cases here, but if I can only get them in cardboard I usually use a sharp paperknife to carefully cut the cardboard up. I then put the cardboard pieces in as covers in an empty jewel case (I buy the empty cases for this purpose) and then store the CD in that. It's a bother, but it works.
