"I feel kinda the same way you do but I've found it's really helpful when I start feeling that way to step back and remember that statistically speaking we're living in a time of unmatched peace, nonviolence, and prosperity--all historically unprecedented.

It feels awful because despite that there's still so much injustice in the world and such kneejerk reactionism and also a 24/7 hyper-connected media system that never lets us forget and operates on a principle of "if it bleeds, it leads." But it's good to remember that that's all it is--that the injustice is visible because we're learning. That the violence is horrible because we live in a world where we recognize it as horrible. That the same hyper-connectedness that keeps this in front of our eyeballs is also a huge machine that's powering enormous social and political change for the better, and it's the same system that's allowing beautiful things to happen by making the borders between different peoples and places and cultures thinner by the day."

I appreciate your attempt at positivity, but I rather think that unless someone takes the helm and starts leading us all back to a way of living together peacefully - unless that happens, I think this is the start of a very dark times.

This actually reassures me a little, so thanks for that :).

I don't blame people one bit for feeling despaired and frustrated and scared, of course-I feel that way, too. But this country's been through incredibly turbulent times before (including an actual civil war), and our country still kept going and some positive change, no matter how small, has come from those turbulent moments.

Apparently this is just the latest round of that for us to somehow work through.

I have lost all hope for my country this week. I just feel... nothing. Except maybe a bit of regret that a giant meteor hasn't slammed into Earth already and destroyed this failed experiment in humanity.

I'm terrified for the safety of protesters and of Black and other nonwhite Americans generally. I'm scared of the massive and racist reactions the shooting in Dallas will trigger, and so sorry for the pain and exhaustion for Black Americans everywhere. This is so painfully ugly.

But not the people who were murdered and their families? Not the people who have to still go out there and do their jobs and keep people safe despite knowing they've got big targets painted on them because of one cop's mistake?

Was the death of that guy tragic? Yes. Was it an act of racism, fuck no. It was the stupid actions of a nervous cop operating a country where everybody is armed and everybody's terrified of each other.

I don't think an attack like this is strategically sound, but it's in the tradition of the great freedom fighters and heroes of this country.

It's a shame that police are now defined as the enemies of black America. Is that a trick? Is that a lie? Is it unfair? Its truth is painted on our streets in blood.

Yeah, the resistance has to offer resistance. I wish Micah Johnson had had a real old-fashioned Black Panther organization to join, so his anger could be channeled into something constructive and useful. But I will not fault him for shooting back.
