Re: Characters you feel were screwed over by the plot

Harry Potter:

- "Screwed over" is too strong, but I actually felt Ron got a little Klove'd, i.e. JKR wrote Steve Kloves's version of Ron. He just got a little more dim than he had been previously.

I actually understand Ron leaving them during DH. It was mostly the Horcrux, and he did try going right back. It's... when he just acts like an idiot, even though that seemed to be a fanfic/movie characterization until HBP.

- Tonks. I LOVED Tonks. Hell, I even loved her in HBP, because I'd actually anticipated the breakdown; she seemed to be someone who actually has deeper layers, and overcompensates a bit by bringing on the happy. I really hoped in DH we'd see her kicking ass (with a balance of chipper and realistic), and putting her metamorphmagus skills to use. I couldn't wait to see where she and Remus would go.

Instead she gets about four lines, never really uses her powers, and dies offscreen.

Remus got screwed over too, although I don't think he was as OOC as fandom thinks. I just don't think we ever got a good resolution to that.

Buffy: Anya. I feel like they just couldn't decide what to do with her in the end.

Agree about Ron, but I think Hermione got Kloves'd WAAAAAAYYYYYYY worse than Ron was (particularly in DH, where she gets literally zero character development or depth or complexity or progression, unlike Harry and Ron. She's nothing but a badass robotic rescue-machine. We didn't even get to see her struggle with the Horcrux like Ron's, it happened fucking offpage.)

TONKS!! So much agreement.

And, yeah, Anya, too. I wondered if the writers had a drunken argument about the last episode in which one faction was Team!SomeoneMustDieToMakeThisSufficientlyGrimdark and the other faction was Team!ItCantBeAMajorCharacterDammit. Anya must have been their compromise death. :(

I'm pretty sure Anya got killed because the woman who played her (whose name I am suddenly blanking on) was the only actor to say "No, I have absolutely no interest in showing up on Angel."

nayrt, but I think that Spike and Andrew were the only ones to show up on Angel post-Buffy?

Back in the day, I'd heard that Emma Caulfield (Anya) had some contract issues or something, and some people think that kind of behind-the-scenes stuff might be a reason for on-screen stuff. Not sure that I agree, and it was only ever rumors.

Do agree, though, that the writers had NO IDEA what to do with Anya after she and Xander broke up. And that her death was there because they felt someone should die in the finale, alongside Spike, who everyone already knew was returning to Angel.

I'm still so bitter over Tonks.
