LMAO. But seriously, Katara got screwed over way before Korra, when Bryke became obsessed with making her a Strong Female Character who everyone must love and aspire to be like if they're a girl or marry if they're a guy.

So I mean pretty much since the first episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Jordan McKee on Haven. Kept sliding further off the deep end for "good" and "bad" reasons (plot-wise), finally started to get her act together and removed herself from a bad situation, immediately got murdered to show just how crazy Newly Crazy Guy was, and went unmissed because she'd told people she was leaving town.

:(

I loved Jordan. Yeah, Duke's dumbass brother killing her was...not their best decision, as writers.

Harry Potter:

- "Screwed over" is too strong, but I actually felt Ron got a little Klove'd, i.e. JKR wrote Steve Kloves's version of Ron. He just got a little more dim than he had been previously.

I actually understand Ron leaving them during DH. It was mostly the Horcrux, and he did try going right back. It's... when he just acts like an idiot, even though that seemed to be a fanfic/movie characterization until HBP.

- Tonks. I LOVED Tonks. Hell, I even loved her in HBP, because I'd actually anticipated the breakdown; she seemed to be someone who actually has deeper layers, and overcompensates a bit by bringing on the happy. I really hoped in DH we'd see her kicking ass (with a balance of chipper and realistic), and putting her metamorphmagus skills to use. I couldn't wait to see where she and Remus would go.

Instead she gets about four lines, never really uses her powers, and dies offscreen.

Remus got screwed over too, although I don't think he was as OOC as fandom thinks. I just don't think we ever got a good resolution to that.

Buffy: Anya. I feel like they just couldn't decide what to do with her in the end.

Most of the characters on Teen Wolf. :(

Not really screwed over by plot, but I wish Bones would have more of a story line or participation in the main story line than he has had in the reboots. Hopefully the new movie will change that.

Almost everyone in The West Wing, but especially Jed and Toby.

Also Sam obviously, but that's a bit too obvious to count (he vanishes during a major character arc without any explanation of what happened to him and isn't seen or mentioned again until one of the very last episodes of the series.)

Zacharias Barnham of PL vs AA. He just kind of got shoved aside and forgotten at one point until a random appearance at the end. I do like his roles in the DLC, but that isn't exactly canon, so...

Phoenix Wright and Apollo Justice in Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Phoenix got screwed over something so stupid that lasted for way too long. Apollo was supposed to take the helm in his own game, but then the focus was on Phoenix the whole time.

Maggie Sawyer in the Batwoman comics, Renee Montoya on Gotham

[personal profile] chardmonster 2016-07-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically DC decided Batwoman couldn't get married, and the comic kind of went off the rails after that. A lot of people seemed to think that was homophobia but it really appears to be that DC wants its characters in constant relationship flux. They're morons who don't understand the audience for that comic basically.

Renee Montoya got pushed off the show after fanboys got upset at her... existence?

Comic book guys are the worst. Seriously.

Maggie Sawyer is going to show up on Supergirl season 2, so hopefully they treat her better. Do comic book guys hate Supergirl? I haven't been able to start it yet.

What happened to Baelfire on OUAT. Also, I feel like it messed up Rumple's story arc, too.

Seven of Nine in Voyager

(Anonymous) 2016-07-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Robert Beltran was bitching about his character not getting enough to do, so basically to shut him up they had the most attractive female character on the show suddenly fall in love with him from nowhere. It did nothing to make his character less a lump of wood, and it really kinda screwed over Seven's character.

Every decent love interest who the plot needed to break up with the main character so the MC could be free to get together with someone else. Apparently writers think there's no way to do that without killing them off, having them pull a dick move out of nowhere, or having them turn evil or at least incredibly annoying. Cho Chang from Harry Potter is a good example of the last one.

Regina Mills in Once Upon A Time

[personal profile] nonnymouscawitz 2016-07-10 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Besides the awkward anti-adoption vibes the first season gives me, the show is just so damn brutal to her, especially in the most recent episodes. It would be one thing if we were supposed to view her as 'Irredeemable Evil Queen,' but the show has repeatedly made a point of 'anyone can change, she's good now!' While still dumping awfulness all over her.

A number of female characters in shonen manga. Sakura and Orihime are the main ones that come to mind. So much wasted potential.

Sirius. He was killed for literary reasons, to make Harry lose every adult who parented him in any way. His life really sucked, and he deserved to live and get some happiness.

Black Widow in the MCU.

Hakuei from Magi. She had one of the best introductions for a female character in a shonen manga that I've seen in awhile. She was really awesome. Then this possession plot line happened.

Jade and Jane in Homestuck.

Jade's plot arc seemed to mostly revolve around falling asleep at inconvenient times, then being evilified via mind control, then being asleep again.
Also the retcon timeline, she spent three years basically alone again, after finally meeting her friends in person.

Jane mostly just... existed, mostly as a replacement for John, when she wasn't being evil via mind control as well :/
And the scene where her dad showed up got commandeered by John too -_-
