Regina Mills in Once Upon A Time

Besides the awkward anti-adoption vibes the first season gives me, the show is just so damn brutal to her, especially in the most recent episodes. It would be one thing if we were supposed to view her as 'Irredeemable Evil Queen,' but the show has repeatedly made a point of 'anyone can change, she's good now!' While still dumping awfulness all over her.

I hate the anti-adoption stuff in the first series. I still get pissy whenever Emma is referred to as Henry's mother.

It was so creepy and gross. Sure, we as the audience know that Regina is the Evil Queen, but no one else knows that, and between the 'Emma's your real mom' insistance, Regina shooting herself in the foot repeatedly when Emma suggest solutions that give her primary influence in Henry's life, multiple people suggesting Emma might (And in fact should) fight Regina for custody, and 'He's MY son' every five seconds from both of them (Yes, even Regina, he's definitely Regina's son but it's normal and natural for Emma to be interested in him now that they're reunited), I am amazed I like this show as much as I do.

I agree. Not a popular opinion around here, but honestly Regina gets so much crap. I think killing off Robin but not Hook was the final straw for me with this show.

It just feels like the show is force feeding us 'Anyone can change' without actually believing it. Either she's a villain or she's not, but the show needs to pick one.

Me too. I think I'm done with the show for a lot of reasons but Robin dying and Hook living was what pushed it over the edge for me. Regina is one of my favorite characters and I feel like they keep piling crap on her constantly when they can't think of anything else to do in the story.

It didn't help that the writers did not think through her mind controlling a guy into sex with her. They were still too locked into the old "bro" mindset where men cannot be raped and it is no big thing how a guy gets sex as long as he gets it. That it came out just as the intersection of rad-femming and MRA-ing and general awareness of male-rape as a thing all came together created a firestorm of hate that the writers were clearly not prepared for or had written the characters for.

To be fair, while I do think a large part of it is the idea that women can't rape men, there's also, I think, a prevalent idea that, because it's a fiction only experience that doesn't happen in real life, mind control/magic coercion aren't 'rape.'
