Re: Most "problematic" fandom you've ever been in

Ai no Kusabi and Viewfinder - two hardcore yaois that basically involve big powerful dominant men raping and making sex slaves of younger guys. So, kinks that are right up my ally, plus, I would argue both series have quite a bit more going for them in plot and some interesting stuff and moments beyond the trash, so there's that. But the fandom was, unsurprisingly perhaps, full of people denying any of it was rape. I guess it's how you'd stereotype a yaoi fandom, except for real. Which is weird, for me, the fact that it's rape is the kink, so why would you try to make it fluffy happy garbage.

I read yaoi pretty much on a daily basis, but the source material itself is pretty problematic and then the fandom just reinforces those problems. I get so excited when I find an author that is relatively normal and not super "yaoi".

I like yaoi and rape is a kink of mine, but I recognize how problematic and fucked up the dynamics are in many yaoi relationships. That's part of the appeal, but it's really appalling how some fans try to excuse the rapists and say they're actually good guys. It got really weird and terrible in the Dramatical Murder fandom where people hated Mink for what he did to Aoba, but were okay with Virus and Trip doing even worse things to him and how it was okay because they "were pretty and obviously cared for Aoba". The mental gymnastics were pretty impressive though.
