Most "problematic" fandom you've ever been in

(Anonymous) 2016-07-13 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
By whatever definition of "problematic" you prefer to use. Just elaborate a little on why it's problematic!

Supernatural because of the way they interact with the cast. I generally think the worst thing fans can do is misinterpret the fiction as having anything to do with reality and then mistreating those involved in making the thing they enjoy.

Glee fandom was the same, back when I was in it, and it was AWFUL.

Ooh, yeah, "Glee" is a good one. I wasn't in the fandom itself, really-I watched the show, but the extent of my participation involved occasionally reading and participating in comment sections on episode recaps on TV Line or SpoilerTV. My sister was the big "Gleek", so any other information beyond that I got from her.

But even with that, some of the fans and conversations I encountered or heard about were...ye gods. *Twitches*

Oh Shit, you want me to elaborate.

All three: Because of the creepy possessive hostile and actually rapey male fans.

Supernatural. First you have the tinhatters. Then you have the crazy shippers. Then you have the child porn.

TW mention of child rape

[personal profile] sparrow_lately 2016-07-13 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember the last time I checked out the SPN kink meme--this was really years ago--there was a prompt near the top the premise of which was "it is abusive NOT to rape children in this universe I just created. One of the Js is a child who has never been raped. The other J adopted him, realizes this, and makes it right. Child J is hesitant and freaked out and adult J convinces him it's okay."

Look. Look. I'm all for people who want to get off on that getting off to written stuff instead of anything involving real children, but holy lord.

Maybe Star Trek TOS, but everyone seems to be so self-aware about the "lol '60s" aspect that it doesn't really come off as problematic in comparison to more modern works like the reboot Trek films.

The West Wing? I love it but omg Sorkin has so much cringe in some of his issue-treatments, especially about race and sexism.

Toy fandoms.

The amount of people in their 40s who have been doing this and tolerate spending money on anything and expect everyone else to be okay with it, the racism, people being racist actually getting stuff from Mattel during Cons...it was seriously a headache for like a year and a half.

Ai no Kusabi and Viewfinder - two hardcore yaois that basically involve big powerful dominant men raping and making sex slaves of younger guys. So, kinks that are right up my ally, plus, I would argue both series have quite a bit more going for them in plot and some interesting stuff and moments beyond the trash, so there's that. But the fandom was, unsurprisingly perhaps, full of people denying any of it was rape. I guess it's how you'd stereotype a yaoi fandom, except for real. Which is weird, for me, the fact that it's rape is the kink, so why would you try to make it fluffy happy garbage.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-13 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I read yaoi pretty much on a daily basis, but the source material itself is pretty problematic and then the fandom just reinforces those problems. I get so excited when I find an author that is relatively normal and not super "yaoi".

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I like yaoi and rape is a kink of mine, but I recognize how problematic and fucked up the dynamics are in many yaoi relationships. That's part of the appeal, but it's really appalling how some fans try to excuse the rapists and say they're actually good guys. It got really weird and terrible in the Dramatical Murder fandom where people hated Mink for what he did to Aoba, but were okay with Virus and Trip doing even worse things to him and how it was okay because they "were pretty and obviously cared for Aoba". The mental gymnastics were pretty impressive though.

Top Gear aka The Grand Tour. Jeremy Clarkson is a walking example of problematic. And almost none of his stans are willing to admit it (I'm not even sure they see it). A few are like "I've met him, he was soooo nice". Yeah, but he's been not nice to a hell of a lot more people. Yanno, like tv show producers. Just as an example. It's the biggest reason I hover on the edge of this fandom; I'm mostly there for James May and a bit for Richard Hammond.

Supernatural, definitely. But it's also the most fun fandom that I've been in...and the one that's least likely to judge me for the really fucked up, kinky shit I post. I guess you just gotta take the good with the batshit crazy

"Problematic" is basically a synonym for "fun" at this point.

Long live SPN fandom, kinky fuckers!

Once Upon a Time. The harassment of actors and the ridiculous ship wars makes this #1. Teen Wolf is a close second. Attack on Titan might be #3. I'm not sure if it's problematic yet, but it's certainly childish.

Supernatural or Teen Wolf I think, just from how batshit both fandoms were for ship-wars and general fan-hate as well as being pretty disrespectful to the actors.

I did have some fun in SPN fandom for a while but eventually the bad ended up outweighing the good for me.

I'm not sure about MOST, but off the top of my head Duke Nukem is up there.

The fandom is pretty split between people who understand that the Duke is very much a product of the 90s, and the people whose entire identity IS the 90s and are upset that it's not the 90s anymore.

After Duke Nukem Forever, I'm not entirely certain the folks running the series understand it's not the '90s anymore.

MLP. You've got:

* The people who're way too into lesbians and jumped on a show full of female characters
* The MRAs crying misandry over anything and everything involving Spike
* The classic fantasy fans who love monarchy and think the strong should dominate the weak
* The military SF folks constantly getting into who-would-win with MLP vs. military SF settings, dragging in all kinds of militarism and glorification of violence
* /b/tards tossing around casual racism and sexism
* The misanthropes who love writing about a species that's "better" than humans
* The super-religious folks who constantly start shit with the lesbian shippers
* The pedos who think it doesn't count and shouldn't be shocking because it's not human
* Scary Discord fans who play up his villainy, woobify him, and make the other characters out to be bad guys all at the same time (thankfully extinct after Discord got redeemed)
* The self-proclaimed feminists who go way too far trying to drive everyone else out of the fandom

I can't think of a kind of wank that fandom hasn't had.

Is it weird that out of that entire list, THIS was the one that had me cocking an eyebrow and going, "Bwuh...?"

Seriously, though, that's...quite an interesting mix of people in that fandom. Wow.
