Mists of Avalon?

Man. I was thinking "Oh, geez, what even qualifies as Very Bad Person these days, is this one of those things where someone said they're not against officially disapproved haircuts?" I... I didn't think of Bradley. If so, yeah, okay, that qualifies.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-16 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Please tell me "officially disapproved haircuts" isn't a thing. Please?

*sigh* It's a thing, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I really, really feel this one.

There are things and stories that have given me a lot of strength in my life and were also created by horribly flawed people.

The most I can say myself is that some people change and other people reveal themselves. One of the authors I thought was brilliant became a raving misogynist after he had a stroke and heard the "voice of Jesus" in his head. Another one wrote a Randite article that tossed around the N-word like punctuation, and so much stuff in his writing suddenly made sense.

Sure but sometimes people are actually terrible the whole time but nerds refuse to notice for some reason. Like with Terry Goodkind. None of his books are unterrible but people still defend the first couple books.

Maybe people have different tastes than you. There are certainly problems with all the books, but I still like the first few, and there is nothing wrong with that.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
That is an amazing piece of writing.

I think I know a little about how to be a fan of problematic things. What book is it?

You can always throw in a "not that I support Very Bad Person in any way, but his series is amazing and you should find it in a secondhand store" if you're worried about it. And that's if they're alive. If they're dead, and it won't financially benefit them in any way to have someone else buy their book, then you can leave out the secondhand store part.

I guess it depends on who it is and how recent their Very Bad Conduct was and a few other factors. I don't feel like I could go to see a Roman Polanski film, but I don't feel the need to qualify that I like some of Charles Dickens' work with, "But I totally don't approve of his horrendous behavior towards his wife and women in general." Dickens was an awful person in many respects, but I feel like the statute of limitations has passed on connecting that with his work to the point that I won't read it.

About the dead author thing--if their posthumously-earned money goes to support, say, gay conversion therapy or Americans For Prosperity or something, I'd still not buy their stuff new.

Oh, for sure, but that's a general rule for me whether the author was a Very Bad Person or not. Since unfortunately, some heirs have done some pretty repellant stuff with their inheritances and the rights, sometimes in direct contradiction with the author's wishes or beliefs.

I hear you. I can't read Marion Zimmer Bradley's stuff anymore after finding out all the child porn stuff. Just thinking how much I used to love her books makes me queasy.

I hope you're not defining 'terrible person' as 'someone who has different political beliefs than me', because that's just shitty.

This.

It is MZB. Her Darkover series to be specific.

For what it's worth, you aren't alone in your reaction. I loved the Darkover series as a teenager, and now I can't read them.

+1, and there's quite a lot of young teen/adult or young teens forced together by adults in many of her books once you realise. Not that she's the only one (Piers Anthony!) but it's definitely creepy knowing her history.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-15 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't read JK Rowling ever since she torpedoed the Scottish Independence Referendum. Especially in light of what happened with the Brexit. If she had supported independence we'd have had a fighting chance of not being dragged out of Europe by England. Fucking JK Rowling.

I rarely pay any kind of attention to the authors of books I like so some of them could be absolutely horrid people and I'd never know, hell this has happened with musicians and I've been like '...oh' when I found out the bad stuff.

Artistic talent really has nothing to do with personal virtue, though. It's not awarded to good people for being good, it's just an aptitude some people have. Some can write or draw, some can cook gourmet meals, some are great at science or engineering, it's completely random. Plus, a lot of creative people feel like a vessel that this stuff just passes through anyway, so this person could have been just as baffled by their success in creating this thing as you are. Half the stuff I write, I have no idea where any of it came from. Especially the purely commercial fluff, that's pretty much an out-of-body experience. It really is easier to manage this sort of thing if you can learn to separate the work from the creator.

I thought the art would tell people which series it was because it's fanart for the series, but I was wrong lol. It's Darkover.

Ouch. I'm sorry, OP.

I used to really like MZB's stuff, especially Mists of Avalon (I really dig King Arthur stuff). Part of me is glad I know what happened, since it's good to be aware, but another part wishes I'd never found out.
