Actually, the creator of the anime only picked his colors to match the room behind him, and didn't even know his name when fans asked him about it later.

So while I :I with you about the secret, I wouldn't use the anime as canon. Technically there is no canon. One person wrote it and someone completely uninvolved in any way drew it. They made Mello's eyes blue in the anime. In the manga (and according to the creator herself) they're black like L's.

I don't know much about Matt (haven't read/watched that far in Deathnote) but ALL of the art I've seen of him has been the black/white stripes...

Is it a manga vs. anime thing? I honestly want to know.

It's a "he was never colored in a manga picture so fans made his color scheme up for fanart and cosplay" versus anime thing. He had no official colors to him before the anime came out because the artist never included him in any color illustrations, along with a good amount of other second-arc characters.
