I simply don't get the obsession, and I also have to wonder why the details of her love life are really peoples' business. Unless I guess all of her breakup songs are about actual (famous) exes, but I didn't think they were? Are they?

What I don't get is why people who don't think she should be writing songs about her love life are paying enough attention to it to know that she's talking about her real life.

Mostly yes? She puts hints in the liner notes so you can guess which famous ex she's singing about.

She does that less and less as time goes on. 1989, for example, was a story with no specifics, and all the liner notes in RED were vague. She's only explicitely namedropped people twice, I believe, once with an ex from high school in Should've Said No (And that entire album was written between the ages of 15 and 16, when people are not known for best decision making) and Back To December which was A) Several years ago on the Speak Now album, and B) an apology.

EDIT: I did forget Dear John and Style. Swift's team claims Dear John is NOT about John Mayer, though most people find that unlikely, but that is once again all the way back on Speak now, and Style is mostly positive.

Um, yeah, they kinda are.

Well, supposedly, anyway.

Dear John, The Story of Us - John Mayer
Back to December - Taylor Lautner
Last Kiss, Forever and Always, Holy Ground (with bonus Better Than Revenge written about Camilla Belle, who he went out with later) - Joe Jonas
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, State of Grace, All Too Well, Girl at Home, The Moment I Knew, The Last Time - Jake Gyllenhaal
I Knew You Were Trouble, Out of the Woods, Style - Harry Styles
Begin Again - Conor Kennedy.
Mine - Cory Monteith

Did not know she dated Cory Monteith. Huh.

That's also not the majority of her catalog by any means.

And the 1989 stuff is generally pretty opaque about it, at that point. Like, "Out of the Woods" is widely agreed to be about Harry Styles, sure. But when you compare it to something like The Story Of Us, it's a lot harder to read it as a specific statement about the nature of her relationship or her feelings about it after. The only song on 1989 that I would argue fits that pattern you're referring to is Bad Blood, which is not about a romantic relationship (at least as far as any of us know). The biggest Big Breakup Song on the album is Blank Space, which is not about any relationship. I don't think it's ridiculous to say that she's tailed that shit off dramatically as of 1989.

Also, most of those songs are fucking bangers, so, you know, that helps you get away with it
