Does anyone know anything about France and Spain? For a fic, I need a small town in each country that was around in the late 1800s. Preferably something under 500 people. I would also be interested if there are any common names that many towns have in these countries.

I know a few things about France, but what exactly?

I just need a small town or two that's been around for awhile. Or a common town name (like Springfield or Washington here in the States).

These are communes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communes_of_France), which is not exactly the same as a town. But click on ant link (they're sorted by region) and you'll get a list sorted by date.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listes_des_anciennes_communes_de_la_France

But when you have a commune that's old enough, search if it's subdivided in villages.

To be honest, I think I would probably just fuck around on Google Maps for a while to get those kinds of names.

But I also really love fucking around on Google Maps in general. God, what an invention.

I did that but then when I look up the towns, I couldn't find much information about how long they'd been there or if the names had changed or anything. Google only wants me to know about the really big cities. I just thought it wouldn't hurt to ask anyone who knows the area.

Wikipedia should have information on a lot of them.

I went to Wikipedia and it did not have information on small towns that I could find. I would really just like a town or two to help me start searching.

Where abouts in those countries? It does make a difference linguistically speaking.

It doesn't matter. I was thinking in the border region between France and Spain but really the only thing I need is that the towns are pretty small, probably not too close together, and fairly generic.

Have a look on google earth for towns around Bagneres-de-Luchon

Common names of people or towns?

Also, Wikipedia is definitely your friend.

Common names for towns.

I tried Wikipedia and I did not find it helpful.

My grandparents lived in a town in France called Langres, which has been around since the middle ages. It's currently bigger than 500, but idk what it would have been then.

Wikipedia would be helpful for establishment dates, although I don't know how in-depth it'll get into historical populations.

Have you tried tourism and/or government sites for information on towns/villages? Also, google the name of the village you're looking at--they might not be on google, but some places might have a fb page with information or where you could ask for further information.

Books on France might be helpful too. If you're in the US/Canada, your local library probably has an online, searchable catalogue; membership is free and if you find a book they don't have they might be able to get it for you via Inter Library Loan. Also, university (or college) libraries might be helpful as well--if you're not a student it might cost to take books out or you might have to use the book on site.

Hope that helps a little bit.
