I guess you'd like fanon over canon?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think the OOC fandom versions are more fun, too.

I like many of the Harry Potter fandomverse more than canon :)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
My best loved, longest-lasting fandoms are the ones where I got into the fandom before I checked out the canon. Canon is like spice for those, fandom is the meat.

Mine, too!

That was Gundam Wing for me. When I finally watched the canon I was like.... 0_o' whuuuuuuut....?!?! Viva la fanon!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-03 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Me too!

(Anonymous) 2016-08-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically you'd rather read about OC's in a specific 'verse. Duly noted.

I've seen this with My Little Pony

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-08-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
All of the main characters were tremendously likable in Season 1. Through seasons 2 and 3, I saw some posters repeatedly criticize episodes where the main characters were total jerks, because that was "out of character" compared to season 1. When they've had more seasons of being jerks than not, isn't being jerks their character?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I would call that not actually being a fan.

I wouldn't do that, but I will chip in that few things make me facepalm more than when large swaths of a fandom will be squeeing over fic that is patently OOC as all hell. Usually, in my experience, because it made some ship look cute.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with that though? A vast majority of shipping is non-canon ships so the only way to portray those ships is in a way that makes them work.

If you don't like the ship, why are you reading the fic? Let alone reading the comments to facepalm?

Same. One of the fics in my currently main fandom that is labeled as "must read" is the most OOC thing I've ever read. My guess is that it's popular because of the kinky stuff.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, sometimes canon will start out great then turns the characters you used to like into something else, not even in a character development way... more like an 'author stopped giving a fuck about them' way. In that case, fandom is better.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. Fic then becomes preferable to canon.

There are some cases where I understand you, so. (Teen Wolf fic, when it isn't horrible.)

Maybe not a lot, but they certainly exist, and I'm sure there are quite a few people who share this with you.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I get what mean completely. Sometimes I think fandoms little spin on the character is more interesting than canon, especially in cases where fans give more depth to a character than canon ever did. So yeah, I think it's a lot easier to love the fanon version of characters more than canon versions especially when fandom cares more about a character than their own writers do.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I'll not be in a fandom but just be exposed to a lot of the fanon stuff and I enjoy it a lot, get hyped up for the canon stuff. When I eventually check out the canon it's never as great as I expected. So yeah fandom stuff is a lot more fun and interesting in a lot of cases.
lb_lee: M.D. making a shocked, confused face (serious thought)

[personal profile] lb_lee 2016-08-02 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Enh, I've known folks who shamelessly said they wouldn't partake of a canon, and then write long convoluted AU fics for it.

I don't quite get it, but it certainly does happen. I got into a couple fandoms because I couldn't find the canon, though in the end, I kinda left because I couldn't help the suspicion that if I watched the canon, I wouldn't actually like it.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
For me it depends on the fanon/canon. If I really love a canon character I may hate the fanon version, especially if I feel like something important to me got lost. Like one canon character is kind of goofy and makes mistakes and I love it because he's not Generic Serious Protagonist and... fanon has him as Generic Serious Protagonist.

On the other, sometimes yeah I'll like fanon a ton better. Like Harry Potter. I have fond memories of Fanon!Sirius Black but book!Sirius Black got on my nerves.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, please share with me your fanon!Sirius fics! <3 I love him to bits, but the canon Sirius makes me upset sometimes, lol.

For some things, I do prefer fanon.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Like if it's canon for characters to shrug off trauma (or deal with it completely off-screen). I like it when fic explores dealing with it. I do like characterization to have at least a passing resemblance to canon, though.

My thought on this is that you still have to know canon to really appreciate fanon. If you know how lackluster canon is, then you like the way Fandom has altered it because you have the comparison.

If you don't know canon... then you're working in a void and may be hit with a shock if do decide to get into canon.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-02 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

Also sometimes the canon you have is enjoyable and likeable and fun, but downright ridiculous. I mean Teen Wolf has a really active fandom still (I believe) and that BBC Merlin show was pretty huge back when it was still on and both of those are silly, campy, low-quality shows.

I personally only participate in fandoms in which the source material has potential, but the execution is definitely flawed in many ways, so I can turn to fandom to see more of and explore that potential.

When I think something is close to perfection, I don't feel any need to seek out a potential fandom.
